this year i've only spent maybe an hour max photographing bugs .. and those times, twice in the grass near our house and once on a water bucket, i've entered one of the pics in a challenge ..

& talk about being in the right place at the right time ... i really wanted something for this free study .. 5 minutes after walking into the grass i heard this robberfly .. there was a slight breeze and he landed near the end of a blade of grass which is a pain coz the grass waves around more than if they land half way down say .. he had already caught the insect which may be a flying ant ..
exciting times .. !!

the robberfly probably measured about an inch long .. the ones around here arent that big ..

ps .. i think this is one of my best insect eating another insect shots ..
its currently getting 6.8 which is awesome in a free study ..

Holy Cow, Roz!!!!!!

I have to tell you. I entered the bug challenge, and I even wrote in my description that I couldn't believe I entered the challenge because I KNEW it was going to tank because all I could see were your images -- and the bar that your images have set -- in my mind. I think I did it to stretch myself and get out of my comfort zone. But sheeeeeeeeeesh! There is no one on this planet that is in your stratosphere as far as bug photography goes!

I was going to say this in my initial comment, but figured I'd wait until the challenge was over in case I might embarrass myself :)
I reckon this could have put breakfast on the fly in the red-ribbon position if they were both in the same competition. 4th for a bug macro in a free study.

This is so insanely good, Roz. Every time I think someone else might be taking excellent bug pictures, you'll enter something that is just in a league of its own. Brilliant finish in a huge FS. Congrats on the HM. You SO deserve it.

Masterful macro. Perfect focus (I will be checking aperture stats on this one so I can learn). Super sharp, crystal clear, and awesome processing to keep it 100% natural. Outstanding. Roz is the only one I know who can do it this well so I'm either right or it's the highest compliment.
