Challenge: Chocolate (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: randi's living room
Date: Jul 18, 2004
Aperture: 5.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/200
Date Uploaded: Jul 19, 2004

Man, what a ton of chocolate. Two borrowed monolights, an orange gel on an orange painted wall (with doubled up ND gels), umbrella-bounced light to the right... Reflections impossible to control, everything covered in black backdrop paper... thanks to my stylist Randi (whose living room I took over).

The place still smells like chocolate. 200 exposures later, here we are. The liquid in the glass was too distracting. But here's a white chocolate martini...

2oz premium vodka (Turi is nice)
2oz white chocolate liquor
.5 oz dark chocolate liquor
Shake clear liquids in shaker, strain into glass, drop Kiss (or Hug) into glass and slowly pour dark chocolate liquor in the middle, as it will sink to the bottom. Serve immediately. :)

Congratulations on your 12th placing. This is a well made composition and the idea to use the magic powder in place of salt is great.

Thanks to everyone who commented. This was an education, for sure... The work seems to have paid off! I couldn't figure out what half the reflections were. The one on the left of the shaker is a 5-in-1 reflector on the soft gold side.

I wish I had had some instant cocoa for the rim (as it should be served, anyway) but this was a mix of natural sugar and cocoa powder - much too "dirty". The lighting on the main subject really didn't "pop" for me and I almost submitted a different shot entirely.

Thanks again.

Great work, good lighting and color. Super depth and good job of hiding the camera in the chrome. 10

very creative, and a nice background

background looks fake... but still a good shot

Good shot--the background is great & the idea is really interesting. Personally, I would have taken the photo from a slightly different angle to try to reduce reflections. Good photo, though. 7.

everything blended fine.

I like the theme of the swirly lines on glass and hug. Maybe would have made the bed of chocolate on bottom a little more orderly or visible. The coating on glass looks a little more like dirt, and the background light is nice, but the lighting of subject is a little dull.

If only you'd left out the shaker and the chocolate on the bottom. I love the simplicity of the martini glass and the complementary swirls in the glass and chocolate.

I love your lighting, background and setup. But I don't see any liquid in the glass - it would be much better if there were some.

A tighter crop maybe? Like it though.

I love it. It looks like it should be an advertisement.

The swirls in the glass really go with the swirls in the candy and the reflection on the shaker really gives it a nice depth.

Very yummy!!! Great composition, crop, color and idea! I think it would be perfect if there was another light source shining on the chocolate at the bottom from the front/right side.

Very effective. Nice lighting, but is that a door I see in the reflection?

I like the gradient background and the reflection of it in just the one side of the shaker. The glass is interesting and having the white kiss with the stripes almost counter the stripes on the glass is appealing. I'm not sure about the chocolate on the bottom although I could probably take it or leave it - I'm not sure how much they add, although I do like their reflection in the shaker. Focus and composition is good. Overall it's a good shot.
