An orange California poppy. I SO hope this meets the challenge and breaks 5.0. I need some cheering up.

I was hoping to get a nice shallow DOF shot, somewhat akin to what Ben has been working on lately but this isn't quite that shallow. Also hoping to have just a touch of that Ursula softness, but it's not quite there. Still, I like it. Kiss of death when that happens, though....

Post:

Would that have been better? To whom do I send checks to buy a 6 these days? :)

Edit to add that for those who don't get to see California poppies - the flower starts out with a green sheath around the orange leaves. When the orange leaves begin to bloom, they shove the green sheath (which has sorta dried out a bit by now) up and off. That's what the "wrapping" is.

This is fabulous! To make it 'perfect', I would have gotten rid of the orange in the background to fit the challenge more.

ETA, the detail here is WONDERFUL!!

Looking at macros as I've been practicing a little. The bokeh on this is beautiful and the detail on your poppy is fantastic! I like both of them by the way.

Again, almost DPC friendly, but still more artistic. DPC friendly is straight forward, don't cut off parts. This was a more artistic composition and a wonderful shot. I gave it a 7, worth an 8 on second look.

Deb - this is stunning. I cannot believe it did not score higher.

The other entry might have scored better, but this is, by far, the better photo. Beautiful!

beautiful shot Deb! My guess is, if you wanted to go for a high score, you should've removed the coverslip from the bulb... anything even slightly confusing the voter brings the score down (unless it is a "Confusion" challenge, LOL).

I really like your DOF. I've never noticed the beautiful "wrapping" texture in the bud of a California poppy. My only suggestion would be to get the whole bud in the shot -- as I recall, they come to a neat point which would add some more visual interest (IMNSHO). Maybe put the bud on the diagonal? Lovely colors and forms in the background.

WOW Deb what super creamy BoKeh! Hits all the marks and I guess I really have been gone a while! This has got to be a 6 on the technical merits alone not to mention the beautiful subject.

:-)

Perfect dof - beautiful subject with that lovely, creamy background. I love the slight tilt.

I guess all-in-all it's a pretty good score, but geeze... Subtlety seems to be wasted on these voters, eh?

This is lovely Deb-a small miricle when that gorgeous bloom emerges ! I love the full bloom one too- your colors & bokeh are so nice !!! Yes I would like to see one with a less tight crop...

I can hardly believe this didn't end up in the top 10! Definitely my favourite pic of the challenge!

So what is on the poppy? Is it some sort of wrap to keep it closed? Love the bokeh on this shot. I don't know which one I like better. I think this one has more interest and the other has more beauty. I think it's a wash in my mind -- I gave this one a 7, and I'm pretty sure that's what I would score the other.

Pity it didn't make it to 6 Deb, so near yet so far. I really like this a lot, but I do prefer the outtake however. It has a rather Ursula feel to it.

Beautiful gentle colours.
Good DOF.
Sin that the photograph has been less well framed.
