uh oh - a candid shot - a situation not involving perfect lighting conditions or poses... what's a photog to do?

First grade field trip - 50 kids at Olive Garden. We parents who went along survived! yay! Actually, these kids did an excellent job with behaving so it was quite an enjoyable day :)

[May. 7th, 2009 11:40:18 PM]

this is doing way better than i thought it would. i love to capture candid moments of my kids and i am thrilled this is being received so well :)

[May. 10th, 2009 10:48:25 PM]

I want to thank Art Roflmao because I probably would never have realized that I cannot spell LOL

[May. 10th, 2009 11:58:18 PM]

Coolness... a posthumous RED ribbon. Thanks, Don!

omg - did NOT expect a blue ribbon for this. Thank you!

I am so touched by all the fabulous and supportive comments on this. I really expected a less than 5 score for this because it is such a quirky candid. I appreciate everyone's words so very much. :)

Michelle this is one of my favorites of yours, for sure - just first seeing it now - such great perspective and focus - terrific tones and storytelling, etc. Fabulous!

This is so good in all respects and really deserved the blue. Browsed your portfolio and i am impressed by some of the excellent work you have in there.

Ooooo... I love this! Big time! From the waitress being busy as evidence by the movement in her hair, to your son making that eye contact, to the child all dressed up and engrossed in his... business.... Perfect, and so worthy of the blue, which is all the more better by not being the "typical" shot.

This is a wonderful vignette of life, with superior use of conversion and range of tones. The expressions and layered compoation is great.

Once again, this is an awesome photo indeed.

I am just starting the HDR photos myself and am very frustrated with not being able to get good results. How did you make this photo? What program did you use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

This is absolutely an exceptional image. I'm SO Pleased to see this intensely *real* little slice-of-life bag the blue in what turned out to be an extremely *artificial* challenge, by and large. What I mean by that is that most of the images seemed rater forced (my own not excepted), and this one stands out as being completely natural. So big congrats!

Great capture of just the right moment. The moving woman and still boy both looking into the camera. the boys in the next booth with their faces visible, and of course that studious boy on the left. But most of all, it fits the spirit of the challenge: a new perspective by using the table top, where crayons and salt shakers and napkins have exaggerated importance, and little boys must compete with them for your attention, which they do admirably. Posthumous Red Ribbon.

The immediate impact of this image is not technical but artistic - it's a stellar capture in which the details compliment the title and the subjects exactly match the impression the author tried to convey. From a technical standpoint, it is exceptional and above average for the general challenge - the exacting tones of black, gray and white demonstrate an indepth knowledge of the zone system and it's use - a perfect conversion and well worth the time to examine closely in addition to the vague, yet detailed background which again, demonstrates mastery of bokeh both as a concept and a photographic tool. A complete technical and artistic success that by rights should place well into the challenge if not a ribbon winner. Well done.
