The important part of this shot is almost lost in shadow. Next time try to get the sun behind the action of the hands for some backlighting.

Interesting composition. Some noise in the sky.

poignant moment.

Voted earlier coming back to leave comments. I *LOVE* the concept you are conveying here in this composition. The hand of the young child grabs hold of the adult/parent as the child faces another day with many possibilities for the future that lies ahead. Parents and care-givers are the support and guidance counselors to the children. They need that love and support - a holding of their hands as they grow. The photo holds a very touching and true concept. While this is a good shot it has the potential to become an outstanding one. The strengths: I love that you have the child's hand holding onto the parent's hand/finger as they watch the sun rise. The sun peers out from the horizon just off to the left of the child's thumb. One area that needs improvement is the arrangement of main elements in a pleasing order that introduces symmentry. The parent's hand emerges from the top right corner. If you crop or compose your shot that the child's hand emerges from the far bottom left corner then what you have is a nice straight diagonal line going from right to left corners of the composition. It is a pattern that the eye will subtley follow and one that will put further emphasis on the joining hands. Lastly to further emphasis this endearing moment of hands joining and further strengthen the emotional response to it, the position of the sun should be closer to the where the two hands join - right there between the child's thumb and the adult's finger that is being held. It would be a subtle visual that shows the moment of contact - the warmth and spark of that connection.

Nice shot, the sun is prefectly placed.

Took me a little while to figure out what the subject matter is. lovely content, but think it could be executed better.
03/16/2009 11:01:49 PM
Nice placement of the sun.

Come away with me this day. We shall walk a quiet path. Through the glen, through the woods, and beside the restless sea.
03/16/2009 01:18:31 PM
Good shot. The holding of trhe finger is a nice touch.
03/16/2009 04:07:41 AM
nice shot

Cute silouette.
03/15/2009 03:03:02 PM
interesting idea, but the flare around the little persons hand doesn't quite work for me, jmo

Adorable and moving.

Sweet shot

interesting shot

Nice. Draws the viewer in nicely. Why not take out that white spot on the big hand? It's pretty distracting.

Very cute, sweet.

great POV
03/14/2009 10:25:46 PM
touching moment. well executed shot

I think if the hands were more toward the center of the photo and the sun was coming through in between the hands, this might be more effective.
03/14/2009 02:47:56 AM
Looks like sailing on the beach. Nice silhouette in combination with the sun.
03/13/2009 06:25:50 PM
Well done.
03/13/2009 06:02:23 PM
Very sweet. It took me a while to figure out what I was looking at. Might have benefited from a little more detail on the hands, but I like the flare, and the reflection on the sand.

Very evocative shot, really nice.

Back to comment and bump: I really like the concept of this image but the execution falls a little short. I think where it fails is that you zoomed on the hands a little too closely. If the adult and child were a bit further away the image wouldn't look as crowded to me. I can see why you think this is a Gem and it will be a fond memory to look back upon as the years go by. The do grow up so fast. Thanks for entering this Gem.

It took me some time to work out what the silhouette was - I couldn't get the child's hand initially. A nice idea, although it hasn't entirely worked for this viewer.
03/13/2009 01:43:39 PM
I took me a minute to figure out what I wsa looking at, but now that I see the hands I like this a lot. Emotive.
03/13/2009 11:44:12 AM
A decent composition, but there is some pixellation going on here along with some noise that I think detract from this image. The colors are a little dull as well.

very emotive

how fun...photo is a little pixeled from cropping...I think...

sweet, works nice as a silhouette

great capture, almost looks like a greeting card.
03/12/2009 05:47:30 PM
I like its simplicity.
03/12/2009 03:53:29 PM
To be honest, this doesn't do too much for me. It's a well enough executed photo, I guess I'm just not resonating with the subject. Sorry.
03/12/2009 02:15:55 PM
Great idea!
03/12/2009 01:34:33 PM
love the chubby little hand holding the finger! title is perfect, too.
03/12/2009 09:02:02 AM
Looks like a childs hand holding an adults hand.
03/12/2009 12:15:50 AM
This will most likely be under appreciated in this challenge but I thing it's superb! A beautiful moment captured!
03/11/2009 06:52:11 PM
nice colors, but would like to see more of the hand and the baby's arm.
03/11/2009 05:38:38 PM
nice composition
03/11/2009 05:34:14 PM
Took me a moment to realize what I was looking at. I like what you are trying to convey, but feel that a change in composition could improve it.
03/11/2009 04:38:25 PM
Not very good focus here but its a nice story.
03/11/2009 03:25:05 PM
Had to look twice but once I saw the hands it made me smile. Beautifully captured, perfect timing. Great sense of design incorporated into this emotive image. Wonderful combination of colors. 10
03/11/2009 12:37:49 PM
a little confusing at first... maybe more open crop would make this better?
03/11/2009 12:28:20 PM
Nice story composition.
03/11/2009 10:04:57 AM
lovely picture. The colors and grain give this a strong mid 1970's feel for me. I wasn't even alive then. Weird huh? I guess that means that it contributes to the pic overall.

If you didn't want the grain, be sure to ask in the forums about 'Neat Image'. We'd be happy to help you figure that out if you want. Sometimes there's nothing at all wrong with leaving it in, but it will probably affect your score.
