Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC for Canon
Location: Afghanistan - Helman provinse
Date: Jul 2, 2009
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/80
Date Uploaded: Mar 5, 2009

The picture was taken just after a dismounted contact. We mounted our APC's and as we were about to drive away I turned around and så this scenarie, quickly grapped my cam and shot this foto:) It's not the best I've ever done, but the story in it and the 1000 mile stare in the soldier is what gives it a thumbs up IMO.

First DP submission, be gentle :)

03/17/2009 06:11:13 PM
this could be a cover photograph, good emotions and light
03/17/2009 12:55:46 PM
Very atypical of what we see here. So subtley emotive, the beam of light is killer. I don't know what could make it better, maybe if we had the story to go along with it... I'm glad he's just holding an icepack.

Your title brings a feeling of sadness to this shot. Great military shot overall.
03/17/2009 10:51:08 AM

03/15/2009 11:55:25 AM
I don't really like that pink light but this is a photo that tells a story, it is photojournalism and I can see it in a newspaper.
03/15/2009 10:59:10 AM
Fantastic piece of photo journalism. I love his thoughful gaze and the streaming light. Well done and good luck for the rest of the challenge.

Poignant. Nice sunlight shaft. A bit dark, but that fits with the mood.

Poignant. The green color curve is odd though.

This photo has haunted me for the past few days. I purposely waited to comment on it until I reached this milestone: this is my 3000th comment given.

I can not think of a more deserving photo. It's not particularly DPC friendly, but it has spoken to my soul. Thank you.
03/14/2009 11:26:54 AM
Wow. This is a scene that most of us will never see. Great shot.

Love the light on his face and the way the shaft of light divides the photo. Really well done.
03/13/2009 06:07:27 PM
Interesting photograph, not just for the celestial light beam but also for the faraway look in his eyes. 7
03/13/2009 03:05:56 PM
Nice photo in combination with the title. Heavy light.
03/13/2009 02:01:39 PM
A moment in time for sure
03/12/2009 05:51:12 PM
One of the few wartime images on DPC that I like and doesn't try to play on US patriotism - nice work
03/12/2009 05:04:24 PM
What an amazingly emotional image.
03/12/2009 05:02:14 PM
Great expression and lighting. Nice pic.
03/12/2009 03:55:47 PM
An example of a shot that takes it to that next level of emotion and meaning. Assuming this is a pure documentary photograph, IMO, an image like this is infinitely more valuable than the posed nonsense we see everywhere. I don't mean 'nonsense', those types of shot have their time and place, I'm just saying that capturing real people doing real things is what I think photography is all about and wish I saw more of it on this site. The expression and light on the face and the shafts of light behind make this a stand out shot and my first 10 this challenge. The photograph just screams 'realness' to me, GL
03/12/2009 12:23:28 PM
why are the blown out highlights magenta?
03/12/2009 12:14:45 PM

03/12/2009 01:29:13 AM
VERY nicely done. A real sense of being there and of being alone there.
03/12/2009 01:27:10 AM
Great idea and a great profile portrait. The pinkish streaming light is a put-off for me.
03/12/2009 12:28:50 AM
God bless our troops.
03/11/2009 11:46:47 PM

03/11/2009 06:36:46 PM
Very emotional photo.
03/11/2009 04:01:15 PM
I like the reference to the famous hymn. The light is almost symbolic of the invisible strength of his faith. This is VERY powerful. I can see it in a Life or Time magazine expose about the Middle East. Good work here. 8
03/11/2009 12:48:15 PM
Wonderful! The colors are kind of wonky, but that might have been a deliberate attempt to capture the mixed emotions that must come within this situation. It may have been a more commanding photo in bw, but I won't deny that this is a very well composed, well lit photo that tells a really interesting story.
