Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Illusions (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-S30
Location: Kitchen table
Date: Oct 27, 2002
Aperture: 9.6
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1 second
Galleries: Macro
Date Uploaded: Oct 27, 2002

The intended illusion is to make the penny (1 cent US) appear much larger than the quarter (25 cents US). The required DOF to pull of the shot was elusive, as was the ability to adjust out the "background".

Good illusion! (I had considered something like this, too!) Too bad split focus isn't a feature digital supports (yet!). 8 Swash

I'm not crazy about the fuziness of the black, but a good idea. I would have prefered it with truly black background.

Penny in good focus. Quarter has lousy focus. can see background that quarter is sitting on. Shouldn't see this. It takes from the illusion.

No focus... no glory.

good shot! the classic optical skewed perspective...like the brown background. (beginning to think these two are not that far apart in value) (8) ~mcmurma

Well, I know it's not easy, but I really wish the quarter was in focus. Since it isn't, it's a dead give away.

The quarter needs to be in focus for this to work.

I think the effect could have been better if the quarter was in focus and the horizon wasn't so clear. I like the idea of perception though. bamaster (7)

Would have been more effective with better DOF... in other words, if the quarter had been in focus, it would have indeed looked as though the penny is larger. With the quarter blurred, though, it only looks like the quarter is farther away...

Would be better for the illusion if the quarter was in focus.

This image would be vastly improved if the DOF wasn't quite so shallow, or the focus be more in the middle so that both coins are equally not focused. - Inspzil
