This is my first real attempt at a nice looking portrait. I used an old film camera flash on top of my camera to bounce light off of the walls.

A great deal of editing was done to this to hopefully make it look a little more professional and studio-like (despite my very rudimentary setup). A lot of people found the eyes to be a little over-done. I can completely understand that. I happen to really like the way I've done them, but I'll know to tone them down a little in the future. Thanks for all the comments and constructive criticism! My next one will be better!

Big thanks to my friend Emily, the model, for her excellent expression and attention to detail. She did a wonderful job!

Ohmy! This is so BEAUTIFUL! In my opinion it is flawless and more. The reds are so wonderfully Asian, and I also happen to love the way you did the editing -- including and maybe especially the eyes. I think it is also very typically Asian in its "look". Congratulations on a fabulous showing in this very strong challenge!

I was going to say exactly the same thing...I think the sharpening and smoothing are a little artificial, but nonetheless you had a personal best and finished well..congratulations

Very nice. She's cute and you have some great lighting and color in this. My only nitpick is I think you may have pimped her eyes a little too much. They look artificially sharp to me.

she is beautiful!

Freaky eyes
12/31/2008 06:28:36 AM
I like globally the portrait, the angle and the warm color, but there's something strange in her eyes (too much dodging ?) and an excessive difference between softened and not softened skin (her nose, ...)
12/31/2008 12:56:02 AM
Whoa! Those eyes! Maybe a little surreal but still nice portrait.

nice portrait but those eyes are way overdone they look freaky

Ah, wo ye shuo hanyu. Ta shi hen piaoliang!

Mei nu is right, and so is the light/background. Excellent combo across the board. I'm just a little distracted by the catchlights in the middle of her eyes...Were your flashes triggered by the onboard flash? Either way, a few seconds of cloning would have brought this to 9 territory from me, but now you just get a lowly 8 :P

Um, those eyes are really disturbing...
12/30/2008 07:08:40 PM
pretty eyes

She's absolutely beautiful but her eyes seem to be held unnaturally wide open which lends the image a (presumably unintended) scary air. Lighting is lovely, not sure about the quirky angle; it's something that I've seen work well but doesn't work for me for this pose.

I think the whites of her eyes look too edited to match the softness/delicateness of the rest of the shot. I like the background stripes.
12/30/2008 02:13:53 AM
the eyes seem to be over whitened to me

Very nice model...To me the eyes look slightly over done.

Beautiful portrait, beautiful girl. I love the colours, and the way the background lines echo the pose. 10

This would have done better had the eyes not been over-done. Also, the skin is plastic like, meaning too much noise reduction used IMO.
12/29/2008 10:49:54 AM
It looks like the eyes have been over sharpened and saturated. Unfortunately it takes away from a good picture. 5
12/29/2008 09:32:33 AM
looks a bet over processed and this is the only thing stopping me from giving it 10, 8 and very well done,
12/29/2008 08:25:00 AM
Beautiful but her skin seems a touch over processed (maybe Neat Image?)with her eyes being over sharp. I love the bokeh and the diagonal line created by the tilt of her and her arm.
12/29/2008 03:29:34 AM
Something about her eyes seems very unnatural. Did you dodge the whites?

The lighting is very nice as is the smoothness of the background.
12/29/2008 12:05:59 AM
Excellent composition, I love the angle you have chosen to place the model in the frame. Background really compliments the subject and I really like how soft her skin looks. The eyes are troubling me a little, I really like the makeup that draws you into them but feel your editing may be a little too much on the eyes themselves...hope that makes sense?! Still a 9 from me :o)
