OK, it's kind of rough, but this is new territory for me. Selective desat plus selecting and darkening background. This was taking at a jousting tournament. I have a couple other action shots I almost submitted but liked this better.
The original:
others:

crop
Select girl, invert and desaturate
Select girl and knights, invert and reduce levels to remove distracting and partially modern background (after finding reducing brightness didn't handle it that well).
adjust saturation, levels, brightness
save for web
(post) Sorry everyone, I was doing new things (selective desat, background selection and reduction) I thought were legal in advanced editing but they weren't. Changing levels is OK apparently as long as it doesn't obscure any objects. I didn't get any more explanation than what you see in the DQ notice. The DQ was actually a blessing, since I was at a solid 3.8 when it got DQ'd! I suspect I would have gotten much better with the background in or with one of my outtakes above. Using the Magnetic Lasso Tool is nice and fast for selection but it makes some rough edges I should have cleaned up. |

Next time try using a blur on the background rather than removing it |

Editing feels a little rough around the edges, but I like the composition overall. |

The background isolation looks fake to me, nice idea and good composition, Cheers, |

The use of the selection tool appears very rough and choppy. To me, it's more distracting than whatever might have been in the background before. |
