Probably the most difficult flower I have ever photographed. When I desaturated the image the whole scene was an even level of grey. I tried photographing it at different times o f the day during prime photography times. Also used two different lenses, several ISO's and a partridge in a pear tree. The red jsut did not want to show any detail. The image here is the result of much work and rework in Photoshop.

very exotic and lovely image. the edges seem to have a lighter looking effect.. maybe thats from sharpening.. regardless, its beautiful!

I agree. This one is a toughie. My opinion is based on my own personal experience, but I think part of the reason why it's so tough to shoot is the same reason why it goes to pretty much the same shade of grey when you turn it to BW. This color of red/orange is reflecting light rays pretty much the same length as those reflected by the leaves. The camera can't cope with it. I get a better exposure, or at least one that I can do more with in PP, if I use something else to meter the light, like a nearby gravel path. Just for fun, set a custom white balance by using the flower petal for your 'white' "D I use my trusty black umbrella as a BG, which seems to help the exposure some. I see you brought out some of the yellow in this gorgeous red cana lily, which helped to bring up some detail. For another fun challenge, try getting some of those cute little red-hot roses that come into bloom right about now. Keep on clickin' & I hope this helps some!

I have shot this flower at least 15 times since this started and have yet to post one, because I just don't like how they come out. You did a fantastic job on an incredibly hard subject!

YOur efforts paid off. Nicely presented in the frame. Red is a difficult color to catch and depict in it's natural light..Touch of orange tint present. Well taken..

Well, all the Photoshop work paid off. This is a lovely shot, well presented. Only quibble is that there's evidence of oversharpening (or maybe Find Edges) on the right edges of two of the petals on the right side.
