Cassandra is five months old. Her mother came here from Mexico and is living with relatives. Her family does not speak a whole lot of English, but Mom is learning and is in our district's ESL program. She came to our district in January, when Cassandra was just six weeks old.

I don't think Cassandra has much of a relationship with her father...from what I understand, he is back in Mexico.

Cassandra is a very quiet baby. She doesn't smile much, and she does not like to be held at all. She is very content to stay on the floor on a blanket or in a bouncer, but does not like to be rocked or cuddled. She holds her own bottle, and in a few weeks she will begin spoon feeding. She tracks objects well with her eyes and rolls over, so I don't think she has any physical or developmental delays...but I am worried about her emotional development because of her lack of desire for physical contact.

We are working with Mom as best we can, but it's difficult with a language barrier and without her being in our Parenting Skills course. Mom is also absent from school quite frequently, which adds to the difficulties. There are seven in her household and I think she assumes a lot of the household responsibilities in her home.

We all just do the best we can...I managed to get this much of a smile from Cassandra, which made me happy. :)

What a sweet little soul.

I think this is a calender in the making, Laurie. Along with your narrative, your portraits really pack a punch. Good stuff. Maybe you could use it as a fundraising tool.

Laurie, can I just say that under the circumstances you've taken a beautiful ENGAGING image of a child who usually won't be engaged - well done you!

I don't know what to say about such a sad story except that hopefully it will have a happy ending. She's extremely cute and you got an excellent expression from her!
