Challenge: Children's Toy II (Basic Editing)
Collection: Good Stuff
Camera: Canon PowerShot A530
Location: Campbell Hall, NY
Date: Aug 4, 2007
Aperture: 3.2
ISO: auto
Shutter: 60
Galleries: Black and White, Children
Date Uploaded: Aug 6, 2007

I rotated, slight crop. I converted to b/w in channel mixer with lots of red channel, creating a blown-out high-contrast grainy picture. And voila! You are watching a Western from the 50's!

====post-challenge======

Thanks for the comments, folks. these are my nephews. No way could I have posed them like this. I just lay on the floor as they were playing and took a bunch of pictures. That's also how I got my shadow photo, though from a different vantage.

The toy is a stuffed cube of some sort that they were using as a ball, i.e., they were throwing it at each other. It's clearly an important part of the picture, and it's unfortunate that people think because something is in shadow and to the side, it is not important. That kind of mistake could cost you dearly some day.

That foreground child has such a determined stance - great concept, the relationship between children and their toys.

Don, I've been really impressed with your work lately, and this is no exception. Does it really fit into the toy challenge? No, but who cares. It's a beautiful piece of work. It captures the emotive jealousy very well, and the relative size between the two boys as captured via your perspective adds tremendously. Adding to faves.

what a brilliant take on the challenge...much more than a cute or manipulated image, it drops right down to the level of the child, both visually and metaphorically...a true understanding of nuance and conflict...
you really nailed this one!

I like this shot and had given it a 7. I love the shadows and highlights...added together with the grain, it makes a very artsy photo that tells a story. Nicely done. Under-rated.

I'd never get my kids in a position like this - they'd be all over each other and on the floor before I could get the lens cap off. Nice use of silhouette and I like the perspective.

I've seen this "scene" many times in our own house...usually one is about to throw down on the other! ;) Great shot and I love the b/w processing!

Great idea. Love the mood this created especially the closer boy with that menacing stance.

Damn fine photo. (That should do for a comment, but WHAT is the silhouette holding? Skateboard? Are there prizes for the right answer?)

The angle of this shot is great. Gives a really good perspective of the two subjects and adds significant interest.

For my concept of this challenge, your photo doesn't fit as well as others. I do like seeeing this in b&w and I like the angle you took it from.

DNMC for me. I am sure you were expecing that though. I don't see the child's toy here. Is that what he is holding in the shadows?

Having a big family this is all to familiar to me! Great composition and dramatic lighting. Even if I didn't "get it" this would be a great photo for its simple design and lighting. Congratulations on taking such a wonderful photo. 9

Quite a powerful shot - but I'm struggling to make the connection with childrens toys . . looks more like a poster on bullying to me.

Or maybe an Ingar Bergman film. B&W, long pauses without much happening and not very cheerful . .

: )
