You did good I like that his colors pop out which I don't think they would have done differently.

Oh - I think you are spot on about the square crop. I wish I'd thought about that.

The use of desat here to bring out his colors is very good. I think the composition might have been a bit stronger had it been closer to a square crop, putting his face and eyes on a thirds section.

The selection around the parrot is too harsh. It makes him look added in. Feathering the selection a few pixels would help a lot. Overall the image seems a little over-sharpened.
