Challenge: Image Grain II (Basic Editing)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Location: Charleston, SC
Date: Mar 13, 2007
Aperture: f/14
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/400
Galleries: Vintage, Water
Date Uploaded: Mar 13, 2007

Thanks to Bear Music for the idea to shoot in JPEG+small to add grain in-camera! It worked! I experimented with high ISO as well, but didn't seem to make much difference - guess there was to much light. To add extra grain, added high degree of USM, converted to sepia, then equalized (not sure exactly what equalize does, but it certainly had a nice effect on this image.) Rotated about 2 degrees left to straighten horizon (oops - can't believe how badly I botched the horizon in camera on this one!) Resize for web.

Note on DQ so others may avoid the same fate: When I installed PS Elements, it included a software to transfer images into Elements. Evidently this software alters EXIF data. It does not rotate the original photos, change the time/date stamp, or change the name of the file, so there was no obvious reason to think it would alter the photo in any way. If you use this software (or other similar software) to upload your images, you will be DQ'd even if you "save as" to perform any editing changes.
Disqualification Details
You must retain your original, unedited file (exactly as recorded by your camera), and provide it to the Site Council along with a list of your editing steps within 48 hours of any validation request. Files that have been saved or altered with any editing or transfer software are NOT originals.

wondered wot you'd got the dq for and opened this one up .... far out and a total suck that you got the dq ..... i'v just gone and checked out some of your other work and came to your beautiful free study for march ... 25th place is awesome for a gorgeous photograph ... it would certainly make up for this unexpected and unpleasant dq .... but something i've noticed .....that because of the dq plenty of ppl take a look, like i did ... and you may get more ppl enjoying this stunning photograph than if it'd just been 5TH place .... well, maybe not, but it could make it feel better?? :)
i gave you a 9 for this by the way ....... i can tell because of the red line!!

That's an unexpected.... well, live and learn. Still a very nice image. Bet it would be even nicer without grain ;-)

Great shot and awesome finish! I saw this and had to check to see if it was taken in CHS - is that Shem Creek?

Love it!

Very very cool shot. This is gorgeous. The colors are fantastic. The composition is fabulous, and this belongs in an art galary. Now for the bad part. I would like to see just a little more grain. I don't really see any. Of course my eyes aren't what they used to be. 7

great pp on this image - love the pelican (do I know who has been taking photos of pelicans lately?) love the perspective with the bird high in the image and the really great clarity on the dock with the soft grain in the crazy colored sky

Looks like the 'grain' is achieved without adding via the PS filter, which is a plus in my mind. That's an interesting ragged deckle-edge border too. Nice work. 8.

excellent shot, good composition, very detailed, good color and tones, but I really miss noise or grain - the border doesn't do it. added as fav, though.

love the composition and colours but I feel like the challege was to show grain, and this photo's grain, imo, isn't noticeable enough.
