A bad way to sharpen a pencil...or...I didn't think my Dremel would cut so cleanly.

Poor, poor pencil.

Nice shot. A little more curve in the cut up pencil might be nice. I'd also like to see just a bit more DOF so the eraser was in focus.

very interesting. it is a nice composition and it begs the question: why? but it does look neat. (6) ~mcmurma

Like the DOF and the way the cutting thingy comes out towards you like that. Reminds me of a childhood snake toy thing, and the composition and shapes and so on just appeal. I am not really sure why but I do like it. :)

Your idea here is really cool, but the angle and focus looses me.
I need more to look at. I am sure this is a great learning shot for the week.
nice dof lession!

You could take the lead out of the middles and string them all onto a rope and you would have a really cool pencil snake. I like how there is a soft focus on the pencil and the (it looks like a dremel or rotozip) tool is crips and sharp looking. What is the bigger shadow in the back of the photo to the left of the pencil? If the shadow could be avoided, that would be cool, but if not, it doesn't take anything away from the photo. Really neat idea. Good luck in the challenge.

I had an idea to do something very similar to this (I guess I'm glad I didn't 'cause it wouldn't have been this good!) I enjoy the focus and DOF very much. Overall, a great picture. Did you play with the brightness at all? Seems a little dark, but that could be me. muckpond

Very creative. I'm sure this took time and effort. Good lighting, composition, subject and focus. A job well done. 9

This reminded me soooo much of my grandmother....... She was deathly afraid of snakes. Once when I was visiting she came in from the garden and said she had seen a snake in the shed and had chopped it's head off with the hoe. Being a curious child, I wanted to see. The poor little sanke was about the same diameter as this pencil and in approximately the same number of pieces......Thanks for the memory.
This is a very creative idea butm, a little on the dark side for me. =6 syamjonimi

Now.....if I could only use this memory for Childhood...... :-D

and the dremel blade that was too, by the looks of things. Interesting idea. Has a very yellow colour cast from the lighting

Great minds think alike. I wish my cuts had come out as clean as yours. I love the old tool, I'd like this photo better with just a little more light.

I like it. The idea is fun. good compositio though a bit yellow... maybe a dark background could've worked and finally, did you try to focus on the eraser?

and I thought I used my dremel for everything. You might have been better off picking a bolder pencil color in this chot the dremmel upstages the pencil.

I wish the depth of field went a touch farther. still very good.

I think this shot would have been served by more DOF, not neccasarily all in focus (Though for this site it helps if it all is) but a tiny bit more would have worked better for me. Also, I think without the tool in front it would have come off as mysterious. Each of these seperate factors could have pushed my score up by one each. --7 Agamemnon

you evil, evil pencil murderer! didn't you know that taking pictures of your crimes is a good way to get caught?

Nice "smoking gun" with the dremel still lurking in the upper left hand corner
