Well, at least I had a lot of fun taking these pictures during my beach weekend... (I would like to share some of the out-takes from this challenge, it was probably my hardest yet to choose from one single photo).

There was nothing strange under the pencils, just plain sea water returning over a little ditch I carved in front of the pencil’s for that purpose. My idea was to get into focus the 3 background layers of waves, the moving water under the pencils, and the pencils, with as much detail as possible with my actual camera.

I was thinking of the landing from the 3 caravels from Columbus’s journey, thus the little understood title.

jsabbarton's interpretation was right on the money, and I believe jmsetzler's was just as good; I was happy of the fact that you caught my idea.

Thanks to all for your time to comment on my effort.

I don't get the title...but than again, I don't really need to. This looks interesting and kind of disturbing. That dark goo looks like it's getting ready to eat someone. Lots of pencils. Definately meets the challenge. Angle and lighting are good. Frame placement is also good. Good luck in the challenge.

Good, but where are the native pencils that were already there? :)

The idea of being invaded by pencils is amusing and you have captured a superb re-enactment involving a division of brave and battle hardened pencil warriors :o) I really love the composition - specially the view out to sea with all the breaking waves. It's not cluttered and there was no need – so I'm really glad you didn't – to throw tomato sauce all over the place to add effect. Overall, this is a very surreal idea, but, none-the-less, a really goods one… I hope I've interpreted this correctly – otherwise I'm going to look a chump… (10)

excellent idea :) I am not able to draw the association with the title though... I would love to hear your idea behind that :) When I saw this, I was thinking that 1944 would be a good title. This reminds me of the barricades that were on the French beaches during the allied invasion of France during world war 2 :) - jmsetzler

I don't know what it is about this one which I like so much, especially where other shots of pencils stuck into the ground don't appeal. Perhaps it's the reflections, the light of the water as it slips over the rock they are on, and the wonderful line and colour of the water and waves. Only thing is that the horizon really should be vertical, but I imagine rotation is not allowed. Outside of the challenge, I bet you've already corrected it! One other thing, I'd prefer the pencils at the right weren't cropped. Either included or not, but whole. Really nice shot.

Very creative idea. Makes me think of those old abandoned piers you see, with only the pilings left.

So how many pencils did you lose shooting this? This is one of my favorites this week. 8.
