Challenge: Motion Panning II (Basic Editing)
Collection: Sports
Camera: Nikon D70
Lens: Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro DX
Location: San Diego, CA
Date: Jan 15, 2007
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/15s
Galleries: Sports, Action
Date Uploaded: Jan 15, 2007

Tried this shot once before, but did not have wide enough lens to properly capture my vision of it. With my new Tokina 12-24 it's easy. Just strapped a camera to my chest with a bunjee cord, dialed 1/15s shutter speed, manual focus, turn on the timer, and go... Turned out it was not so easy to control the frame and precise timing of the shutter release, so had to make approximately 10 runs. Still not quite what I wanted but close enough.

Perhaps some purists would say it is not exactly panning because I don't move camera with my hands, but I think it is... In my book panning is moving camera with the subject while blurring the background. Who cares if it is moved by the subject? :)

Post-challenge:
well, i told ya so... I did not expect that there would be so many "purists", though... Still, a decent finish for a "DNMC" shot - 50 comments, 27 10's and 3 favs during the voting, i think this is the best yet for me :)

Didnt see this one earlier. I like it and your new one, although the frenetic action of this one appeals to me more.

I have to tell you ... I shot about 147 pics of myself on a bike for the last panning challenge and had nothing good from it ... it's harder than it looks. I didn't have the guts to ride with the D70 though - I had the Lumix. Anyway, this is great - nice job.

As to "who's to say," well, it's like this: you don't get to make up definitions just because you want to try something outside the definition.

ok, if you say so, let it be my best DNMC shot :). And thanks for the fav!

I like this image (I like photos taken from vehicles; it's where we spend a lot of our lives, and if someone can show me something different from that perspective, I'm all for it). Still, I don't really buy it as a motion panning shot, and I'm trying to be pretty technical on that to keep things even across the shots here. In terms of what's here, I feel a bit off-balance when I look at it. Maybe that was the point, but rotating just a bit counter-clockwise -- but not too much ;) -- might have left me a bit more at ease with it.

mortal trick! how'd you do that? 10 points from me (for once I had the experience of shooting while riding, crazy business)

Amazing perspective..very original viewpoint. I like all the parallel lines coming toward the rider. The handle bars add interest to the shot. Any one can relate to this shot and it brings up emotional feelings in the viewer which few photographers can achieve...nice shot

I dont know whether to call this "panning" in the strict sense of the word, but ...this is the photo with the greatest sense of movement of the lot. If I keep looking, I can nearly feel motion sickness coming on.

Oooh, I feel queasy! Great sense of motion here, and the tilted handlebars really add to the feel of an out of control type of ride!
01/19/2007 02:17:42 PM
This is not panning.

That is motion but not traditional panning. 5 because I like the image

01/19/2007 09:34:32 AM
This is a really nice effect, but i would assume from the angle and position that it's not actually a motion panning shot?

Very cool. I feel like I'm actually on the ride

How on earth did you do this???

01/18/2007 03:01:40 PM
This is motion blur..not panning motion.

01/18/2007 10:13:09 AM
there's a great sense of movement within this picture.
it almost makes me feel dizzy!!!!
technically I'm not sure if it counts as motion panning though?
but who cares eh?
actually, probably lots of people.
but not me!!!!
i like the movement here.

This pic definitely has motion blur, but doesn't really fit the panning challenge topic

Wonder shot. The blur effect really makes me feel like I'm right there with you. Great wow factor.

01/17/2007 10:29:30 PM
Really cool pic, but doesn't look like this was true motion panning, more of a fixed camera on a moving object...
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/17/2007 10:18:17 PM
this is nice as far as images of motion go, but i thought that panning involved following a subject with your camera causing the background blur. maybe only a technicality??? 6

Cool picture, but IMO, this is closer to motion blur than it is to motion panning. 5

humm...a very good concept!!!!
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/17/2007 03:24:12 PM
This to me is not true panning as the camera is part of the subject, your effect is good though..

01/17/2007 03:10:11 PM
Gives a great feeling of motion, but seems not to be panning.

OK... how did you get that shot... ? Fabulous sense of motion and speed!
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/17/2007 01:31:46 AM
Not really getting a feeling of panning in this shot. Zoom yes. Panning now. Panning would be having the camera follow the subject either left to right or up and down. (Or the reverse of these). As such this does not meet the challenge. (nice shot otherwise however)

01/17/2007 01:28:49 AM
Great shot, but not panning from what I can see.

01/17/2007 12:53:05 AM
Cool enough shot, but I'm not sure it qualifies as MP IMO.
