Challenge: Black and White Portrait II (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Date: Jan 9, 2007
Aperture: f14
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/160
Date Uploaded: Jan 9, 2007

Put my lens in the freezer and then shot at room temperature while the fog on the lens gradually disipated.
Think it created a very nice and even effect, one that can't always be achieved with filters.

Rudy's Lesson of the Day:

When in doubt, put your lens in the freezer.

Cool idea man

You put you're what? where?!?!? I'm pretty sure you've lost your mind but just in case a small bit of sanity is intact and you attempt this again....I do like the idea in theory. However I think just a bit too much "fog" is still on this shot. If the fog were relegated to just the corners like a vignetting it would have worked better for me.

I would have been scared that the condensation would have entered the inside of the lens. Nice effect though.

Still a great placement out of 500 pictures ;)

I'd love to see this re-done without the Freezer effect... your model is stunning :)

i voted this a 7. she's beautiful and i would have voted 9 if her gorgeously shaped lips were not in the fog. i didn't know you could put a lens in the freezer! for how long? ...so much still to learn. i would be so afraid to do that. yike. i'm not sure about the title either... i get why you put gradual, but i'm not getting funk or funky from this photo. more like gradual dream or Gradient Haze... i dunno... just thinkin' with my fingers. love her eyes and the curls are spunky. maybe gradual spunk. okay i'll shut up now. i really want to know how long you put the lens in the freezer for. do tell!

Really pretty, nice effect. 9 After a lot of thought came back to give it a 10, my favorite of a very tough challenge. (I only give one 10 per challenge)Really unique style and statement. Great job

Something about this photo just speaks to me ... I think I love the fading out and yet the freckles come thru ... 10

Love the piercing eyes and the curls add extra interest. I've looked at this a number of times and can't decide whether I like the misty effect or not. It's different and holds my attention so that's a good thing! Well done!

I like the curls fading into an obscuring brightness. A unique photo. 8

Cool shot, but why the misty effect? I think it would also be good without it...

I think this could have been one of the best, but I find the haze distracting. I really like the framing of the face with the hair. Beautiful.

I love the whole mood with the curls and the faded areas. Edit: if you saw it, already I meant to write - 9

Very interesting, I like it but I daresay I might've liked it better without the whitish gradient I see. But then again, now that i look at it again, it's does work in a way. So anyways, either way, I think it's cool :)

I guess I am a bit too conservative for this shot. 6

This is cool looking and different I like it. The only thing I don't much like is the fading to white at the top and bottom. Maybe I am just too conservative thought. I think the eyes look amazing.

I do not like the blurred effect, IMO this would have been an awesome shot without it! With that being said I still like the shot a lot because of the clarity of the eyes and the curls and maybe instead of the blur a tighter crop would have worked. 7 Good luck in the challenge.

Noooooooooo.. this could of been great, but whats with the hazy bit at the top/bottom.. you really have killed a great image with a bit of poor processing. the framing/composition were bang on.. such a shame..

Titling this one as Redhaired Curls (she is clearly a redheaded model which shows how good it is) and lessening just a tad bit the fog effects would have been stupendous and sure to ribbon. 7

this. is. gorgeous. i could do without the white gradient, however. i think you had a stunning shot without it.

This photograph could be beautiful- the closeness, the ringlets, the eyes, and the freckles are all compelling visually. But why the fog around the right corners and edge? If those areas had the same clarity, this picture would be breathtaking.

This would have been fantastic without the gradient blur...I would have made this square to include more curls at side of head and left off the blur. Curls, those eyes, freckles work well together.

The focus on the eyes is awesome. I think it would have been better if the whole pic was a little more in focus. Maybe you did it on purpose but this time I think it hurt it. Good luck

I love what you're trying to do with this photo, but I think a tighter crop on the bottom (losing the lips entirely) would have achieved it in a more striking way than all that softening.

I voted this a 9 because the photo is just stunning. I would have given it a 10 if you had not of added the filter you did. I am not even sure it is a filter, but the photo was stand alone with out that. I think it takes away. Anyway, good job.

This is a beautiful image with some really bad editing in my opinion. Your model has piercing eyes and lovely ringlet curles and you it's all fuzzed out to where you can barely even see it. To me this should have been very simple and impactful, let the model speak for herself.
01/10/2007 12:23:45 AM
oh my gosh. this is insane funky greatness! the curls are sweeeeeeeeeeeeet! 9
