Postchallenge: Thank you all very much for the lovely surprise of my first blue ribbon. Since landscapes in portrait mode is my favorite way to shoot landscapes, this is a very special ribbon for me!

Also, it's special since it is one from close to home, in one of my favorite places. This is the Mohawk river as viewed from Niskayuna, which is 50-75 feet below me (on my left is a cliff).

Thanks again!

At first glance I thought this was taken on Peebles Island. After reading your description I see I was pretty close, only maybe 10 miles away! Congrats on the blue ribbon, fellow upstate NY'er :)

Congratulations! What a beautiful, image.. This is my moon river dream fantasy find exactly like I have visioned... So there is a river for me to find out there somewhere with the moon over head and lovely surroundings...

All but this one was hit at the right time, the right moment, by the right person for a outcome as this...

Blue ribbon well deserved...
The colors are so rich and warm yet cool too... mmmm its fall...

Breathtaking - how on earth is everything so saturated with color without getting artifacts/noise? GREAT SHOT would have gotten a 10 from me.

love the hues here, they all compliment eachother well here , leaves match sky and the river almost appears as a stream or creek at first glance. I had no idea thats a cliff on the left. More like a bank, but I see the depth now.

It's been a long time since I have heard of Niskayuna! I lived in Saratoga Springs from 1989 to 1992! That is such a great area. Congrats on your win!

Wowsers Neil! I am totally with graphicfunk. The foreground bushes and those leaves just reach out and grab you, and then this dead solid comp, and those lines, and the tones and color, ...just takes your eyes and draws you in, and in, and in, chasing that suhweet! vanishing point. A totally awesome, and very well deserved blue. I just can't believe you havn't already got one :-)Congrats! and Well done.

I'm speechless! This is just so beautiful. If this doesn't win the blue, I'm throwing rotten eggs at DPC. I wonder if this has HDR work - if so, it's a great use of the technology. In any case, I'd like to know how this image was done. But outside of technical stuff, it is just a great composition, so clear, yet it has such softness to it. WOW. 11 from me (if there were an 11).

Nicely composed riverscape. Captures the feeling of fall using a somewhat surrealistic presentation. The detail in the delicate branches and foreground leaves are its strongest characteristics. Though the bright area in the center of the sky adds drama to the composition it is a bit over exposed. You might want to try toning that down a bit to see how that looks. The right side riverback seems a bit "busy" with its great amount of detail. Perhaps adding a little blur on just that area would soften its overcluttered look. Overall this is a very, very nice shot.

This is probably my favorite of the challenge. It has more than just one level of interest. In the foreground are those glorious red leaves, then the water and the reflected sky, then the sunset in the background, with more color and texture. Stunning work. I'd be proud to hang this on my wall. 10

That's sweet :-) My kinda tonalities... I'd like to see the dirt lower left burned in a bit. There's a certain blobbiness to the deeper blue center top that's distracting, and a cyan cast to the brightest area. But overall very strong shot, and excellent use of extreme DOF.
