I want to thank everyone for their comments and the time they took to vote. This tree is a giant sequoia and I would guess that he was a baby before a white man set foot on this continent. The old ones are older than 300 years old.

Seems to me to be too obvious of a redwood shot.. Would like to see a more creative perspective.... 4 sjgleah

Beautiful texture, clearly old (and massive.) What I don't like is it is too centered and the tree or pole directly next to it on my left detracts. I think I'd have shfted the camerea to the right a bit and included more of the path and people looking at the tree. The curve of the path would draw you to the people and they would draw you back to the massive Seqouia. (sp)

Something old. Use your photographic technique to emphasize the age of your subject.
Composition - good. Wish you waited for no people in back
Technical Aspects - quite good. Did you try B&W ?
Meets Challenge - yes
Visual Impact / Originality - high

This is one of my favorites this week. Yes, it is old, and yes, you can see how old it is; I like the people on the side, it gives you a perspective of how old this tree really is. 10, well done.

wow.. this thing is massive... I would be curious to know how old this tree is.. do you know? These things are amazing. I would love to see them sometime... I think you made a great choice of including the people in the frame on the right... they give great perspective to the size of this tree.... good work :) - jmsetzler

I'm SO glad you got some people in this shot. It gives it 110% more impact. Lovely colours and a good amount of detail even in the shadows. Choice of angle really tells us everything about the sheer size of this thing! Love the picture. This is a sequoia right?

WOW! I know it's very hard to photograph things like that, because you can't get much into frame, and you need to establish the scale of it. You accomplished the second part really well, but the photo itself is just a bit flat to me.
08/07/2002 06:51:00 AM
The people give a good indication of scale.

Pictures have been taken of these for as long as they have had cameras, so it is difficult to take a "new" picture of one. In that case the photographer must strive to take the best picture he/she can. I have no suggestions other than just think of how you could have done the picture to cause interest in the viewer. A difficult task at best. Good luck! Autool

Thats a big tree. Nice photo, the people give it a great sense of scale.
08/06/2002 11:08:00 AM
great 7
08/06/2002 01:17:00 AM
the people in the background add interest and make you realize how big it is.

I saw a tree like this in north Alabama. I am wondering where this was taken. Kust unreal ! Nice subject for this week:) Shiiizzzam

If you had cropped the people off it would be better. Great shot and I like the leaves in the foreground

Thats a hell of a tree, nice picture good thing you got some people in there, otherwise ?.?.?.whoknows
08/05/2002 09:13:00 PM
people to the right are blurry

Nice shot. Must be in British Columbia ... went there 20 years ago. Very nice texture.
08/05/2002 04:45:00 PM
Nice colors! I'm not sure if I'd like this better with or without the people though. Did you try a vertical composition? It might be interesting to see it from that perspective.
08/05/2002 03:44:00 PM
Impressive age
08/05/2002 03:34:00 PM
Very good that you also show the people to the rigtht of the tree, because it gives a perfect impression how huge this old redwood really is. Well done!
08/05/2002 02:26:00 PM
Excellent photo. I can't decide if cropping the people out would help or hurt.
08/05/2002 01:41:00 PM
I liked your use of people to show the relative size of these old trees
08/05/2002 10:57:00 AM
Now that is OLD
08/05/2002 09:50:00 AM
Nice pix, the people on the right should have been cropped out or the camera moved to eliminate them.
08/05/2002 04:56:00 AM
The people on the right really tend to distract from this photo. Otherwisee, I'd like to see a bit of leveling to get rid of the "brightness."
