Camera: Canon PowerShot Pro 90 IS

When I asked my mum what to take for this week's challenge of "Something Old", she suggested the ancient abacus that my grandfather had used during his day. The abacus is the oldest calculating device ever, and so I thought it might be good to submit it with other newer calculating devices, to emphasize its age.

Ahhh...the abacus...The greatest tool of them all. Used by ancient greeks I'm sure for complex buildings and other calculations. The image should speak volumes to others.

That old Casio looks about as old as that abacus:) Nice picture.

The reference to the challenge is strained at best. The composition is equally uninspired. 2 Jak

Would have been better without the electronics. Maybe even a more abstract form or perspective of the abacus, without the bright/fresh/new-ish lighting.

lame and the shadows are distracting

I'd have liked this better (for this challenge) if you'd left the newer calculator out.

Lovely idea for a submission and oh my where did you find that old calculator! Nice lighting and arrangement. Well done.

I like the contrast between OLD, newer and NEW. Focus is great, framing is pretty close, great color, but it lacks ZING. I keep thinking, could all three have the same total, as a way to re-inforce this idea? Maybe not. How would you communicate that total with the abacus? I started this shot as a 6, but it's really well shot and on the challenge, so let's bump one, welcome to the 7s. Swash

Something old. Use your photographic technique to emphasize the age of your subject.
Composition - ok
Technical Aspects - good
Meets Challenge - sort of. The abacus looks younger than one calculator
Visual Impact / Originality - ok

This is a fun picture, very well done...

The modern calculators are not necessary. And the shadows are all pretty harsh.

I have an abacus too and was considering doing something with it for this challenge. Even though your title makes the abacus THE subject of the image, the focus of the image is really on the two modern calculators, one because of its bright colors (what did you do to that poor calculator? :) and the other because that's where the image is very sharp.

just hte abacus, well-lit, would have moved me more. It's a good idea, though.

The colors seem to be overdone and theshadows on the white background are distracting.

Nice color and contrast. The abacus alone might have been enough.
