Prehistoric Mortar & Pestle of the Juaneno Native Americans. Saturated + 30 (more or less) Unsharpened 250 / 4 Pixels. I thought I might be oversharpening, but I've learned to trust Carol's judgement.

not too exciting, the background is too similar to the foreground, so it all gets a bit lost

I kind of like the narrow band of colours, and the matching of background to texture of subject, but the overall shot doesn't sing out to me.

Good title. Would like it a lot more if the background is less busy... find the backgound too busy right now

Definitely says old.

If you could have gotten this at a different time of day or when it was more overcast so the lighting wasn't so harsh, then taken it at a different angle than from straight above...I think I might have liked it better.

Good subject and background. Not sure about the *strong* shadows, though. They become more of a focus of attention than the mortar and pestle. Nicely captures the grain of the stone.

I can't argue about the old part. I even like the way it matches the background, but the shadow is overpowering to me and draws my eye away from the main subject. Autool

I originally scored this low, but it's simplicity is really growing on me. It is not a bad photo at all, so I'm bumping it up.

Simple, yet effective. I think this could have been a 10, with more of a story behind this shot. Some grain in the bottom, maybe some ground up would have told this story more completely. The background could be more effective for showing off the subject if it contrasted more. 9 Swash

shadow is too harsh. use of a fill flash on right would help even tone. I like the left side

This is a neat artifact... I don't like the straight-down angle of this shot and the shadow on the right offers a little too much contrast in this image... this particular artifact is definitely worthy of a photo experiment with some lighting... - jmsetzler

Fill flash would have softened or eliminated the harsh shadows in the bowl and on the right.
