I simply seized the moment, without my tripod..and so really should have had a deeper DOF. I am entering because I like it. This is in an old farmhouse on Lake Muskoka-the wind billowed in, and the lighting was to die for...but getting the shot with her requires speed...make it happen now or never. I am lucky to get five shots in...
I left the negative space at the top to emphasize how small she is..
levels, rotate, lightness to gray to quadtone, crop, curves, smart sharp
Thank-you for all the wonderful comments-much appreciated.

I had to laugh when I read your comments about how your lack of "Technical Correctness" somehow detracts in any way from this shot.

I am nothing but an amateur hack with nothing but enthusiasm, a good eye, and I know what I like.

This one's spectacular!

Congrats!

You were very nearly cheated out of your much-deserved first place by an obvious fake. I'm really and truly happy for your sake that justice has been done, and that you can now fully enjoy the fruits of your efforts.

On a side note...
I also hope that this sends a strong message to DPC'ers out there to get to know your craft.
The vast majority of us won't allege that a photo should be DQ'd unless we ACTUALLY know what we're talking about.
Well spotted, Imagineer!

Hey, an image like this is not supposed to win a ribbon. I mean, where are them wind mills, boats, or orange skies, or at least glasses with liquid? :)

This is a great shot. Congratulations!

The more time spent worrying about being "Like the Pros", the less time you have for capturing something *real*

This shot is all about the real.. The moment.

We all dream of shots like this.

siezing the moment is far more important than the technical quality of an image (which, I think is pretty nice here)..when it comes to shooting people.
This has nice light, and the image conveys an overall feeling.

I think a crop off of the left and the top somewhat though may help, great image though, I think it shoulda won.

I really like this shot. Love it actually. But I have an observation, which I'm sure it's just a mistake, but how could you use an aperture of 2.8 on a lens that only goes to 4.0?

Also, congrats!

I AM so happy THIS WON a ribbon. It was definitely one of my top 3 favorites in this challenge! I'd say, what separates you from those that are technically perfect -- the real pros -- is that YOU have an award winning, 2nd-place ribbon and they don't :) CONGRATULATIONS! This is just awesome!

this is one of those 'I wish I had taken this shots.' Perfect the way it is - no cropping needed, no better focus - amazingly beautiful. I didn't vote this challenge but if I had, this would have been my 10. Congrats on a well deserved ribbon.

9 - Excellent image. Not much to 'suggest', maybe the staircase railing cropped out, but unlikely - looks near perfect to me. I want to say a whisker of a nudge rotate up on the left - but I think it is just a visual thing. The b&w works so well. Up to 9 from 8.

very nice light and comp. After finishing to view and vote for all the pictures, this is definitely my favorite. I would have cropped a bit the picture to remove the last stair and perhaps even the whole left part 5cm behind the little boy's back... but anyway, i hope you'll win, as for what i've seen in this contest, you totally deserve it !

What a BEAUTIFUL photo! I think if this were cropped on the left a little more so the stair rail was not in the photo, and maybe a little at the top, it would look like a gallery photo! I LOVE IT!!!! The lighting is exquisite!

Besides the photo being top notch...it's also cute. I'm wondering how it would have looked with more stairs showing and less dead space at the top. Probably just as good...nice job. 10
