This is a macro of a knot in the Crystal Pier dock in San Diego, I got some strange looks sitting on my knees in the middle of the dock taking a picture of wood. They would never understand.

Wow -- really cool effect. I just love the muted green in the background... it almost seems painted. Nice job.

SHARPNESS. I like it. Good design. what's the white thing in the hole though? I like it but it's distracting.

I like how you have framed this shot, and the focus is wonderful. I now it is outof your control, but if there had been something really interesting through the "aperture" that would have been cool. karmat

Of all of the wood photos this week, this is really great - and on it's own. Liking: Angle, focus, composition, cropping, the sand in the crevices, the water below - everything. I give it a 10! Wonderful Work!!

This is a nice, crisp shot. I like how the knothole leads your eye down below. *6* -balynch

this looks great in black and white--try it! it is a nice shot. The white diagonal beneath the knothole is distracting to me, but the image is well done. ~mcmurma

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

Looks like it would be too far down for me to get that close. Just out of curiosity, why did you pick this particular aspect ratio? One of my top ten picks.

This texture shot is quite nice.. I love the diagonal. The only thing i don't like about the image is the bright subjects that are visible in this hole.. maybe this is some of the pier supports... I know you had no control over that either... the level of brightness in there is much brighter than any other part of the image.. this being the case, it is a bit of a distraction and it does draw my attention away from the beautiful texture of the wood around this hole... still scores well.. = 8 - jmsetzler

Cool framing, and the aperature is perfect for this shot!

very nice, totally un-clichéd wood photo. I like how weathered the pier looks. a little more DOF and some more light for the hole's insides might have added to the overall impression. 6 beegee
