Challenge: Monuments (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Location: Detroit, MI
Date: Aug 24, 2003
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/800 sec
Galleries: Sports, Vintage
Date Uploaded: Aug 24, 2003

A stainless steel sculpture of Detroit Tiger great Hal Newhouser located at Comerica Park.

This shot is pretty much direct from the camera with a bit of cropping and a touch of USM after resizing. Taken handheld with the Canon 70-200/f2.8L IS at 120mm.

This was a challenging shot to compose because of all the advertising around the scoreboard -- that is the reason why 1) you are only seeing a part of the sculpture and 2) the cropping is so tight on the left and right. (If you look under the left armpit, you can see a bit of the big red 'Budweiser' sign that is underneath the 64' x 34' scoreboard.)

You mentioned that the crop was very tight (with good reason), but I wonder if perhaps a boarder could have given it more breathing room?

all: Thanks for all the comments! It is pretty exciting to win my first ribbon.

marbo: good job on noticing the cobweb! There are actually two of them, one above and one below his leg, both attached to his foot. I didn't notice them while looking through the viewfinder -- it wasn't until I got home and downloaded the pics that they showed up. I wouldn't have been able to do anything about them anyway, since the sculptures are on pedestals, well out of reach.

kiwiness: the 70-200/2.8L IS is my favorite lens by far!

I was expecting something from Yankee Stadium. Well-lit without glare; I might have laft it a little darker, or get the background darker so it would look more obviously like a night game, and isolate the figure.

My favorite of the challenge. Excellent composition, the scoreboard in the background makes this shot work. Very sharp and clean, you can even see a cobweb under the leg. Deserves a ribbon 10 +

This is very interesting. I like how the screboard was incorporated into the background with just enough sharp focus to tell what it is.

Nice crop. Perfect use of DoF, retians the scoreboard as an element of the photo, not totally blurrred, but emphasizes the subject. Diffuse light is very nice. A sunny day would have been bad news for this shot!

Great composition. I think a little less sharpen and a boost to the contrast would give this a more powerful feeling to an already powerful image.

I love the focus and the composition. The background is perfect, too. Congratulations!

Great job making the best use of the background! I think that's the key to this particular challenge.

I love this shot. As a baseball fan it coverst both the past and present. I love the detail, and I love the subject. Coming in spikes high...The only two things that get me are the left foot (because of the light sky, the spikes dissapear) and it feels slightly sharp. 9

Outstanding clarity! Contrast is good except for left edge behind scoreboard. Perhaps an evening photo or an angle 30degrees west would have perfected this.

I really like the framing on the left side of this, but wish I could see more of the lower right, Well lit. Good luck.

Great DOF. I love the composition on this. I think I'ld like a tad more space to the left of the shoe but not sure you could do that without doing more harm than good (making the head to close to the right edge for example).

The composition with the lit scoreboard in the background really makes this photo. Good contrast. Wonderful photo. 9

I wonder if you took a step to the left, to get only the score board in the background how it would be. I think you would have a much stronger image, perhaps try cropping out the 'lines' on the sides?

Outstanding! This has that "wow" factor and is easily one of my favorites this challenge. Using the scoreboard as a backdrop is inspired.

This is very good. The whole composition is ideal. The gray tones of the statue are highlighted extremely well through the background and shallow DOF

Beautiful composition. I like the way you crop this one. Sometimes cropping out the whole statue takes away from the image, but I think this one works. The facial expression is captured and it shows him facing where he is going to pitch to. Great depth of field. Really bring the statue alive.

I think the background really makes this image. The monument is great, dont get me wrong here, and the crop, which doesnt seem to work at first, actually doesnt really do anything too negative to the image, but coupled with the background it really tells a story.
