The Pumpkin design (the cannibal idea and the basic carving) is not my idea. I am extremely non-creative in design (and I hate that) so I checked the web for some ideas. Because many pumpkin sites are overloaded at this moment I cannot find the original designer right now.
But I did all the carving myself (with a print as example). First time I ever did this. Pumpkin carving and Halloween are not a Dutch tradition.
All in all I spent about three hours with carving, lighting and photographing. It was fun, I don't care how it does in the challenge. :)
I used three pumpkins. The big nose is a seperate one as well. The nose of the small one broke off, but it sticks on with a bit of water. As soon as you touch it, it will fall off. :(
The top looks nice, but in fact it is kept in place with nails. I expected these things to be hollow, so I used a bigger and bigger knife to get the top of. Now there is too much room between the top and the pumpkin.
Light is from one 25 watt spot from the right on a bucket, plus four waxine lights on the bottom of the table on the right.
The pumpkin itself was on a black bucket.
The background is originally black, because I used a black EPDM membrane over a chair, sitting on a ladder, two meters away from the pumpkin.
I chose the 70-200 VR (VR off) because it was still on the camera after shooting sports this afternoon. The long lens also helps to throw the background out of focus and the f/2.8 helps to focus in the dim light. Altough this is shot at f/5.6 the DOF is still very shallow.
I wish I had a diffuser for the lamp, but it fell on the ground and broke my only bulb before I got the chance. :(
Oh, and I know it should be something like Cucurbita Cannibalis, but I expect few to know full latin stuff (and I had to look it up as well).

Even though it's not quite original (neither is mine), it doesn't grow old! Nicely carved and shot! |

i really enjoy the center alignment as well as the plain background, which accentuates the portrait of the pumpkin... |

More like a symbiotic relationship, like those little fish that live in the mouths of bigger fish. |
