Wow congrats Chris! I was away for a couple weeks so I hadn't seen the challenge results until now. Your hard work certainly paid off.

77ltd, they were normal 120v bulbs. the wires were all attached in parallel and then attached to an extension cord with built-in lamp dimmer.

check out a view of the wiring here. i doubt it would meet electrical code!

i never ran the lights at anything close to full brightness, though, and only for a few seconds at that. they were very, very dim during the exposure.
10/23/2005 09:20:54 PM
I'm sure its a fundamental question... but how much voltage do you have going into the bulbs?

wow, daniel, i hadn't seen your image before, but clearly all art is derivative! i wasn't able to find unfrosted bulbs; but i think yours works very well.

i note that deapee's 'illuminate' entry in 'illusions ii' continued the trend of standing bulbs on their end.

it will be interesting to see what others will do with them next!

hi everyone,

thanks to all who commented on this image both during and after the challenge. i know that the ‘personification’ aspect of this entry wasn’t entirely obvious, but the comments i received tell me that many of you understood completely what i was trying to convey here, and this is truly gratifying to me!

setting up all the bulbs was a fair amount of work, and i would be happy to elaborate on the process if desired. the most difficult aspect was getting the exposure just right, as minute changes in the lighting tended to completely change the mood of the shot.

here’s an outtake that, to me anyway, feels very different:

also i would like to extend my congratulations to the ribbon winners and my respect to many others in this challenge who submitted such excellent work.

Interesting concept...and how you did it must have taken a lot of thought and preparation and hard work. The exposure is absolutely perfect, the focus excellent. My only nit is that the composition seems a bit unbalanced. I think it would have been better to include some more of the dark area on the left to more equally match the area on the right, or crop some off the right. All in all, a very worthy effort!

OK, Not sure HOW you did this but its Excellent!! I will definately look it up afterward to find out. Great imagination, use of space, even lightting. Love the subtle light beams coming off just the broken one.

Terific idea. I love all the different sizes and shapes and the different levels of life within the bulbs. Did it have to be a baby one that died?? This is really sad. Well done.

candles behind the bulbs? with a 12v bulb in front? nice sharp photo going to join the few i have voted 10

The bulb front left, "leaning" in helps to sell this shot. And of course the neat effect with the single light point is a big plus too! ;^)

Bumping this up. Good luck in the challenge.

I think this is an excellent application of personification. There were only a limited amount of entries, IMO, which did a good job. This is one of them. It looks like it took some setup with the bulbs too. 8

A lot of time and effort went into this set up. A great concept well executed. I would be interested in technicly how you regulated the individual bulb brightness. A wonderful winner.

Nice image you've made. I hope you post your setup after the challenge. Given the title of your image I think a different colour light for the "tainted" one insead of the pristine white would have solidified your concept. Very nice none the less.

Undisputed THE best picture in this challenge. Non-human looking with an obvious meaning, no dispute here whether you met the challenge. And the special effects and picture as a whole are just awesome. -- 10

I'm sure i would like to read about this one in "How'd they do that"... I guess you used some sort of "paint with light" technique... because the bulbs are not conected to their own power source and still they glow... excellent job... i'll give you 9 for this.

10/12/2005 01:48:00 PM
death is a human thing - met challenge. Okay, all 'alive' things die but I'm not THAT picky. There's always at least one dim bulb in box. ;) I enjoy this image so I'm giving it a 9. Meets the challenge, technically proficient, amuses me (most important part). I would have liked it cropped a little more on the right so its as tight as the left (better balance for me), but that's my opinion only. Good luck in the challenge!
