 wow...I'm honored. I never thought this shot would do this well, with so many comments and folks interested in the behind the scenes.

Needless to say, it was one of the most difficult shots I've ever really done before. Most of my shots are just something standing still...this one involved quite a bit of user intervention. Anyway, onto the point...

I knew what I wanted and that I wanted blue in it...so I set out and bought a blue keychain light thing (I wanted one on a pen, but couldn't find that in blue). As it turns out, the blue was REALLY overpowering...so I ended up backing it off some with selective color and just leaving a bit of cyan in.

I ended up shooting around 80 shots in 4 different sessions from different angles, etc. In the end, I found that around 6 seconds with a rather large aperture (i think around f/4 or 5???) and a nice, slow, controlled movement worked most efficiently.

I felt the lines of light I got from selective color really added to the interest for some reason...so I left them in. I couldn't sharpen the shot any, whatsoever, or the lines of the ring light got really whacked looking and rigid.

In the end, looking through different shots, this one just seemed to be the best angle and the most 'tame' if you will of the circles going around the lightbulb. I really liked how part of the rear was covered by the light, and part peaked over the top.

A useful tip for when you're going through shots that are so similar, is that when you name them, take the original name DSC_1060 for example, and name your shot light1060 or whatever you like...that way if you ever need to revert back to the original, you won't be fumbling around like an idiot...it's right there and ready to go.

Very cool! I love how the swirls of light are kind of tilted at an angle, it makes it much more interesting!

well done - congrats. i think i might have done something about the lines created by the selective color adjustments. they kind of stood out to me before i read the description.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, I'm honored and humbled at the same time.

mcfly: I didn't put it on a string -- I actually ended up taping the ring light with black non-reflective electrical tape to the end of a pen. I shoulda added that in the description...kinda slipped my mind. The whole pen was wrapped in electrical tape too so it wouldn't reflect.

wow...this is a great shot! I've been messing around with flash light exposures, but this is wonderful. Do I have it right, you put the light on a string and twirled it around the bulb? Great idea!!

Sweet pic. Had the lightbulb been lit up, I think that might have been a better illusion, but I still think it's a great shot. I like the color and the focus and clarity are excellent. Love the lighitng around the bulb. The centered comp does work for me for this shot. Congrats on a great shot. ~Heather~

Did you process it in 265 tone levels or something? The distinctions between the shades of light add to the rings feeling. Somehow Kiwiness, EddyG and Gordon come to mind, so good job!

I can appreciate this as I just did a lightbulb shot for the Long Exposure challenge. The blue hue is nice. The object you've mounted the bulb onto is a bit of a distraction for me. I might have tried to get the rings at the top less staggered than they are here.
