This large thundercloud threatened us on Route 6, about 30 miles south of Price, Utah, USA.

There was actually lots of traffic, and I only had a few seconds for each shot as I stood in the middle of the road--for both my safety and to have an absence of cars.

I didn't do a whole lot to this image, but I did use unsharp mask several times with several strengths. The most radical was at 140 radius, threshold of 8, and at about 30 percent. This cleaned up the haze a lot. Other sharpens were for real sharpening, and different areas of the photo required different settings.

This is a very lovely road, with the Book Cliffs on the east and the stunning Wasatch Plateau to the far west. This photo looks north to avoid any mountains or cliffs.

David,
Congratulations on your 2nd, looks like it's good times for the boys from Utah!
08/26/2005 11:46:02 AM
Congratulations, David, it's good to see you on the front page again!

My family and I just came back on Tuesday from almost your neck of the woods - we went to WYoming (again!) for about 10 days. Sure saw a number of scenes like this one. It's so beautiful.

Congratulations again!

Wow, thanks for the comments and votes! There are a lot of very strong images in this challenge; I'm quite surprised at this result.

Some had questioned whether I was going through this storm--the fact is, I had just barely come through it. Luckily, we were behind a large truck for the rain was amazing and coming down by the bucket load. We really couldn't see a thing and had considered stopping. But just as we (my wife and I) were about to pull over, it stopped very suddenly. We went a bit further and I stopped to get the photo. I do wish I were just a few feet to the right--but was afraid of traffic behind me.

Thanks again!

This is a menacing yet calming photo at the same time. I'm a bit hesitant about the blown detail to the right but it seems like the dark clouds offsets the image and balances things out. 7.
08/18/2005 07:46:34 PM
I suspect the apparently tilted horizon is an optical illusion - I sometimes feel it is better to cheat things a little to correct those, as illusion or no it disturbs the ba;ance of the image somewhat. The absolute darkness of the clouds feels unreal, especially given the contrast with the flatness of the light on the land.

Love road shots, and this one is very nice indeed. Glad you chose a straight & unremarkable bit of road; it directs the attention to the key point of your image, and contributes to the feel of it, without getting in the way. 7

08/16/2005 06:15:09 PM
The leading lines of the road going into the storm, and the division of the picture into earth/space/clouds is particularly effective. However the slight shift to the left kinda bothers me. It is not enough to feel like it is on a stable "third spot" but not centered enough to give the picture a stable feeling. Knowing how some people are uneasy before a storm, though, that might help establish the mood.

By the time you're there it's all over. :)
Good subject matter, technically good. The brightness on top is a bit distracting, it draws the eye out of the rainstorm. I would like to see a tighter crop tat focusses more on the road and the dark clouds. 7

Very nice open road shot. Very attractive perspective. Sky look very interesting. I suspect some burning was applyed on those clouds; it may be my monitor, but the clouds on the left side are definately too dark, almost to the point of detail lost. 8

I like the toned-down, ominous feeling of the colors here. Also, really great road shot - the lines of the road and the lines of rain on the horizon are very nice.
