BTW....when you are big and famous over here..remember the little people like me and invite me to a celebrity party or two :-)

Arni..those other shots are fantastic. The model you were using has a power in the camera. He needs to be a front man for a band or in the movies. He has a very powerful presence.

I know you have a nice camera so you are not limited there and I am glad you make the most of it. I don't know what your photographic/design schools are like where you live but obviously we have a media freak out society over here in the states and you could find all kinds of options. Maybe a large city like New York or L.A. will give you the place to study AND do photography on the side at some studios or whatever.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the good comments :)

Especially you hokie.

People either loved the white space or hated it! Actually I'm thinking off going to learn photography overseas. I'm still looking into some schools.

Here are some photos I took the same night I shot my entry:

Arni, you were robbed.

I think, based on some of the comments I saw, some folks need to start studying some photography outside of this web site.

This photo is so good on so many levels arni, as most of your photos are. For someone your age arni have you considered a career in photography? I am not a photography by trade but I know a lot of them and you are as good as any I work with. Great photo...leave us amatuers alone :-)

The use of negative white space, the level of contrast, ...oh fug it!!! I am preaching to choir here arni.

very nice.
06/02/2002 08:46:00 PM
amazingly white background, I'm wondering how you pulled it off.
06/02/2002 07:25:00 PM
Was this taken in snow? I like the edgy composition. You have the zones covered among the face, background and jacket. The shirt, although it's lovely, is too bright. I'd go with a darker one. (this may be a repeat. There was a glitch when I entered)

I love the framing and focus of this shot. An excellent entry for black and white, too. Very nice job with the lighting... how'd you pull this effect off?
06/02/2002 10:18:00 AM
great bw. dude is a character. too bad the top of the frame is so empty.
06/01/2002 10:40:00 PM
I like the pose and the use of negative space to create a different feel than a tighter crop would have
06/01/2002 09:16:00 PM
Nice job dropping the background without losing the image!
05/31/2002 12:01:00 PM
So good... Great contrast and detail, and the composition works for me. Digging for nits, I do notice that the skin on his face has picked up some digital blech, and some shadow detail is missing. A little positive gamma and punch up the darks a little to keep the contrast and it would be perfect. Congrats!

Nice photo .... I love the white background in this ... would have like to have at least seen the subject's hands, even with the same framing.
05/30/2002 09:03:00 AM
Very nice use of empty white space at the top of the photograph. It adds to the feeling of isolation of the young man.
05/30/2002 08:20:00 AM
Simply great portrait photography. Meaning a great subject, great expression, great photography/lighting and great post processing.

Arni..is that you?..Isn't it time you quit beating up on us amatuers...:-)

One of my four 10's this week.

i really like this shot. the flat white background is perfect and the contrast is fantastic. good job.
05/29/2002 05:08:00 PM
Very nice... ad quality.

I really like this photo. It makes me want to go out and take portraits of people only in the bottom half of the frame and leave a lot of white space. I like the subject, the expression is great, and the white space really enhances it. It makes the "disappointment" more poignant because it makes the subject more insignificant, blah blah. If you are getting comments to fill the frame more, ignore them, because those people are wrong ;-)
05/29/2002 01:27:00 PM
Nice focus, I like the stark white background. Good expression on your subjects face for the title. I would have prefered less "white" space at the top.
05/28/2002 11:10:00 PM
I keep coming back to this picture--I just love it. I do wish it was cropped way down from the top--or put a thought balloon up there to tell us why he is so sad! ;)
Fabulous capture of mood.
05/28/2002 10:16:00 PM
too much blank space at the top of the picture. could be cropped down to about half of what's there for a better picture.
05/28/2002 05:50:00 PM
How did you "wipe" the background? Extra point for the only pure person photo, but wouldn't a background have added interest, or explain why he's disappointed? Eyes appear as black holes, probably not a good choice of effects.
Photo 9 Creativity 9 People 9 total 9 (personally, I didn't like this photo that much, but there isn't any one thing I can put my finger on and say, this is bad, so you get a good score anyway.)
05/28/2002 12:06:00 PM
great use og B&W. Like all the white space.
05/28/2002 10:33:00 AM
Photoshop background?
05/27/2002 08:54:00 PM
Well composed and exposed, good job
05/27/2002 07:03:00 PM
Cool shot.
05/27/2002 06:59:00 PM
Hummmmm, this is different. Was this on a totally white background? Wow. Need to crop some of the upper dead space out.
05/27/2002 05:56:00 PM
Ojbarasta. Það mætti halda að yemenskur dvergur hafi tekið þessa mynd. Rass og rusl. Líka viðbjóðslegt módel. SKÍTUR!!!!
05/27/2002 01:47:00 PM
oh my god, hes hot...
05/27/2002 01:10:00 PM
the space up top is impactful,(down) but maybe a tad too much of it?
and eyes are waaaaaaaaay dark.
nice emotion
05/27/2002 12:38:00 PM
i love negative space
05/27/2002 09:48:00 AM
excelent comoposition
05/27/2002 09:42:00 AM
Nice shot here. Why all the dead space at the top, though?
05/27/2002 08:55:00 AM
I like the white space.
05/27/2002 07:44:00 AM
I don't understand the white space. Crop in closer to the portrait subject to direct your eye immediately to the expression. Otherwise a nice mood shot.
05/27/2002 03:38:00 AM
Very very very very cool... not just the perfectly white background and the crisp black and white and the framing, but also the expressiveness of this guy's face and stance. And his cool hair :)
05/27/2002 12:36:00 AM
I think this photo would have been really nice if it were framed up a little better... there is too much 'white' space in the top half of the frame.
05/27/2002 12:21:00 AM
makes you wonder what happened to this guy - excellent
