This is a great shot! I actually like the guy being in soft focus. However, some of the tiles seem in sharper focus (they probably aren't but it just seems that way) and therefore compete with the guy for attention. Imho, this shot would have tremendous power if the whole thing would be very soft (gaussian blur on the tiles maybe? ;)
And you had the guts to submit this to a dpchallenge? Some of the rule-abiding voters must have had a fit.

The vote span on this shot is really interesting -- usually, photos that place near the middle of the pack have a very normal curve, with little standard deviation around 5. Between 5 and 7, your distribution is almost uniform (if you'll bear with me :) The shot is amazing, though, and I still think it shouldn't have placed so low.

Gordon, I think the 'blur' is an integral part of this photo.. It's ashamed that it was not viewed as intended motion in this photo...

to the various people that have commented about movement, lack of sharpness etc. You are correct, however there isn't actually anything that could have been done to improve it, without bringing in extra lighting, switching on the sun etc. As you can see from the settings, I'd already bumped the ISO level and had the f-stop as wide open as I could get but still could only get a 1/20s exposure.

The sharp tile and blurred man indicatge this was taken at a slow shutter speed. That is the down fall, this would be a much more compelling image if the man were sharp. also, the light on the floor creates a visual pull away from the man.
06/02/2002 10:02:00 PM
I think this might be better if the man was more in focus. It's a nice shot, but as a result of the subject position, there isn't that much to look at

i really like the use of negative space in this photo. the only thing that keeps it from being worldclass is the sharpness or lack thereof
06/02/2002 01:45:00 AM
Love it! Very unique composition.
06/01/2002 10:48:00 PM
What is this the rule of corners? It works well here
06/01/2002 10:12:00 PM
I like this. You used the extra space well.
05/31/2002 12:29:00 PM
A strong image, but I think it would be stronger if the floor tiles were lined up in the frame. The composition, while non-traditional, is good, but I think you could get the same effect with 1/3 less negative space. A faster shutter to freeze the man would be my personal preference.
05/31/2002 08:41:00 AM
very interasting composition
05/31/2002 06:16:00 AM
I kinda like this image. I like the dead space. I think you had a good idea here. The leaving person should have been in focus though. Also, for this challenge I would prefer to see more people in the picture.
05/30/2002 11:44:00 PM
Id like this if it was sharper or more blurred to show the movement. Seems too much in the middle ... almost like a mistake. I know you were not going for that, but that is the impression I get
05/30/2002 05:58:00 PM
I like the fact that the guy's suit is so monochromatic, and that he's looking off outside the frame. a little bit of motion blur on his leg, arm, and head emphasize the movement. hard to tell if the floor is grainy, or just mottled in color (or both).
05/30/2002 08:40:00 AM
What can I say. You take a big risk with a photo like this on a site like this.

Congratulations. Near perfection. I think if you could have gotten a stronger shadow effect from the subject you would have been one of my favorites. As it is you and "Wave Watching" are fighting it out for my last top 10 spot.

Top 11 for sure.

i love this shot. the patterns of light and color on the floor are fantastic, and the framing i brilliant.i like the motion blur on the guy, but i'd really like to compare it with a shot that had him more in focus. i'm not sure which would look better, though. great job.
05/30/2002 06:42:00 AM
Great idea. I don't mind the oof bloke, but I think it could be better without the lights from the doors/windows? at the top, thus leaving the man the only point of interest in the photo.
05/30/2002 01:16:00 AM
very minimal. i like.
05/29/2002 05:05:00 PM
Nice photo...
05/29/2002 04:50:00 PM
Empty.... but for some reason I seems it works. Well done. Maybe giving it a blue cast to provide some 'cool' mood? Man's head is also a little blurred.
05/29/2002 02:45:00 PM
Simplicity, nice color gradiation, yet life. I like it!
05/29/2002 12:06:00 PM
great composition and storytelling
05/29/2002 11:50:00 AM
He moved! I think motion in this case wouldn't be needed, it makes this shot appear out of focus, instead. At first glance, I thought you had missed the subject intirely, was he walking that fast? As the floor doesn't offer alot of "interest", I would have preferred him a little more centered.

bit out of focus. good placement of your subject. could use sharpening though. could stand to have about 1/2 of the sidewalk cropped out and still have the same effect.
05/28/2002 07:24:00 PM
Nice Shot! This is one of the best pictures in this challenge. Black and White would have looked beautiful. Check it!

Good shot! I like this one alot. maybe the blur gives a feeling of movement but I just wish the guy was in sharper focus.
05/28/2002 12:59:00 PM
What a great idea. Unfortunately your subject is out of focus. This shot is unique enough I would have given it a 10 if in focus. And because of that I gave it a 5, even without the crisp focus I would have liked to see.
05/28/2002 10:59:00 AM
Great shot, very original. I wish that the guy was either more focused or showed more motion though.
05/28/2002 09:34:00 AM
Could have had sharper focus, otherwise really like it.
05/28/2002 08:32:00 AM
Wow, either this place isn't very popular or you bribed everyone to stay out of the shot. I like it a lot. Great composition, title works well. If only the guy had been focused - that would've been better IMO, but I understand you may have actually been going for the slightly out of focus effect.
05/28/2002 12:00:00 AM
Cool - so much negative space is brave but I think it really works here. Reminds me of some very stylish poster adverts (Aquascutum, Boss etc)
05/27/2002 10:47:00 PM
The use of empty spaceis good, but the figure is not clear enough.
05/27/2002 07:14:00 PM
Cool perspective. I like it. Little OOF is the only negitive. Nice work.
05/27/2002 12:52:00 PM
This ones really neat---but he's not in focus. The position in the frame is great, you lost it on focus.
05/27/2002 12:33:00 PM
this shot has the potential to be great. love the use(lack of use) of space. Would be better if subjects head were facing into the photo instead of out.or, if the man was on the other side of the photo (bottom) looking back. Also, looks a bit out of focus.
05/27/2002 09:56:00 AM
Great shot. Fantastic framing. If only he was in focus. Kodus on creativity.
05/27/2002 09:35:00 AM
brilliant
05/27/2002 09:19:00 AM
I love the technique used in this photo. The usage of a lot of space and the single subject is great. This is a technique I haven't seen used in a while. I just wish the guy was focused.
05/27/2002 09:18:00 AM
Sort of a 70's modern art feel. I like it.
05/27/2002 08:11:00 AM
The thumbnail promised to be an excellent shot, but the blur/focus problem bothers me. So much potential.
05/27/2002 03:00:00 AM
I'm sure this photo will polarise the voters. I'm one of those who loves it! Very striking. It creates a real atmosphere, and although the man is blurry, I think it's in a good, line of action kind of way.
05/27/2002 01:34:00 AM
Looks like a poster. I like it
05/27/2002 12:26:00 AM
I love this kind of thing
05/27/2002 11:20:00 AM
i love negative space
05/27/2002 10:08:00 AM
Interesting photo.. the motion blur does give me the sense that the subject is leaving the frame... I'm not sure that I really like his proximity to the extreme lower corner of the frame though....
05/27/2002 10:05:00 AM
excelent composition
