A different perspective on my orchid... I thought about this challenge for quite a while. I also shot a few photos of various flowers in a natural environment. After sifting through all of those and deciding that I didn't have a background situation that really worked well, I decided to 'make' my background in this photo. Black posterboard seems to make my color stand out more and isolate my subject from other distracting elements that could be in the image...

CC Good Wednesday morning JohnBoy

Fits The Challenge-Yes
My Opinion-You walls are starting to sag from the ribbons. I suggest getting a reinforced shelf. :)All kidding aside this is a lovely shot.
These orchids aren't easy to shoot. They edges have a bit of a glow, or color change that can make them look blurred. At least that has been my experience, I even could see that on the ones in the store. You handled that very well.
I like the composition...it's 'in your face'.
As always very good John, a well earned ribbon.

Congratulations John, a well earned ribbon.
04/29/2003 04:45:59 PM
Congrats on the ribbon. This really is a very nice shot. I confess I gave it a 9, but that was because I interpreted 'Flora' as being plants or flowers in their wild setting. But it is a very good photograph in its own right. The thing that sets it apart, I think, is the arrangement of the three blooms - it almost looks like one bloom looking in different directions (if you see what I mean). Focus and lighting are spot on. What did you light it with, by the way?
04/29/2003 01:23:10 PM
You are so lucky I didn't have a chance to vote on this one. I would have given you a 1. hehehehe...just kidding. Very nice shot John. Congrats. on third place. Glad to see you back up here.

It was a tight race! I'm glad to see that all your studio work the week before paid off... funny though, these were taken outside :-)

I think that your exposure here is perfect. You captured the beauty of these flowers in more then just a photograph, but also your composition leads the viewer into a more peaceful relaxed state, until you look at the center of the middle flower and the illusion of teeth make you realize that even something this beautiful can be dangerous. :-)

Nice work John! Glad to see you found your mojo :-)

I am a fan of orchids and have several shots of white ones. These in pink are stunning. Congrats on placing!

really great lighting, superb shot angle... looks really alien too!
04/27/2003 09:58:58 AM
Very pretty, but I'm not sure the black background works. To me it undermines the brightness of the flowers rather than enhancing it.

Great lighting on the lead blossom. The way it fades into the bottom is a selling point to me. Nice photo, my fav so far.
04/22/2003 03:50:56 PM
It feels tilted, maybe the very center thingy should be straight?

My favourite for the challenge. Nothing at all to criticize about here, the lighting is wonderful. Why can't I get my lighting like that? A perfect 10!

Nice photo.
04/21/2003 12:45:37 AM
Truly beautiful, no distracting background... a crisp clear photo all over (wonderful use of large DOF) Interesting... great colors, all around a perfect shot! I have to take off for that little grey spot though near the bottom... hehehe J/K. I also like your use of broder, the white with the black around it helps define the fine white line around the subject. Absolutely gorgeous. -10- nice job!
04/21/2003 12:42:08 AM
I guess it's not in the wild, but it is a beautiful capture. Stunning colours and clarity and beautifully balanced. Well done!
