salt on a over driven speaker
talk radio(uhgg) worked better than music
& AM better than FM
------
112 outtakes but i'll show only 3 ;)

initial trials had colored sand - though salt worked the best
if you look closely, you can see little trails on the salt crystals
that is the decay of the flash (initialy very bright then dimming till extingushed )- they are in the reverse direction of the movment of the salt -
the image was done at 1/160th (6ms) and the flash was ~3-5ms -
bit-o-fuzz in the center ofthe image was salt dust --
--not too messy -- large sheet of paper under it all caught almost all
but glad i used salt & not sugar ;)
it was noisy - 3watt 5"speaker & my familiy didn't care for the experiment
--also no speaker was harmed -- still quite functional --

This was from my very first challenge ever on DPC, and it was one of my top faves that really made me like this site. So, thank you for this awesome photo :)

no -- it would take a few min. to throw it around & some times i just emptied it to try a new color or etc ..

what was also really neat -- just leaving a bit-o-dust and the speaker on a more normal volume -- allowed the dust to 'creep' along .. which was facinating to watch but would make for a boring still image //

So did you have to refill the cone after every shot?

Congrats on your top-ten finish Ralph.
Gotta' ask - how many takes did it take??
06/01/2005 12:21:32 AM
Great job Ralph! Very inventive.
06/01/2005 12:14:37 AM
I truly expected this image to ribbon and even to finish higher than mine. I think you did a wonderful job as this is the most exciting image in this challenge. Congratulations on your top ten finish. The underrating is a mystery to me.

05/31/2005 02:24:02 PM
very unique and dynamic! I love the lighting and the imagination in this shot.
05/31/2005 07:25:57 AM
I love it. Very clever and well done.
05/31/2005 05:29:01 AM
Very clever:)) A speaker I guess? Would have been great if you could have hidden the wire with something..but ORIGINAL so 8:))
05/31/2005 05:02:32 AM
creative !! Could have more closer and better shot .. 7
05/30/2005 11:07:11 PM
Fun fun fun! Great idea!
05/30/2005 01:28:41 AM
What a creative idea and well photographed, too. Among my top 10 picks.
05/29/2005 08:43:05 PM
Very cool shot! I with the grains were in a little better focus. It could be that the shutter speed was too slow as well. Otherwise I really like it. Original and well fitting of the challenge.
05/29/2005 05:53:30 PM
I like it. It's too bad you couldn't hide the wires on the back side of the speaker.
05/29/2005 02:20:38 PM
Great idea!
05/29/2005 03:18:03 AM
haha Great idea.
05/28/2005 10:30:31 PM
you should have cropped that cable!
05/28/2005 10:11:47 PM
a great shot...the cable is distracting...a shot taken from the opposite side of the speaker would have been more effective...good job...
05/28/2005 10:06:26 PM
Very clever idea for the challenge. I like it.
05/28/2005 12:30:11 PM
I love this, but had no idea what it was. I had rated it a "9" till my husband saw it and said "that's great - it's a music speaker!" Is he right? I still wish that the wire wasn't so prominent, but bump to a 10.
05/28/2005 12:27:44 AM
Wow
the idea is just great, and the grains are so nicely distributed in the picture
05/27/2005 08:04:23 PM
Great idea! Well planned and executed beautifully!!
05/27/2005 05:32:09 PM
visual noise. nice beat.
05/27/2005 05:01:11 PM
Love the idea. As a musician I can really picture what was happening when you took this. Hope you had on earphones. ;-) Like the trails like little metiors on some of the grains.
05/27/2005 06:23:40 AM
Nice
05/27/2005 01:29:07 AM
Borderline off topic, but such a great photo I will give you a seven anyways
05/26/2005 08:33:59 PM
LOL i hope you did not need that speaker?
05/26/2005 07:07:07 PM
so very creative and well captued...should attach warning "dont try this at home"
05/26/2005 03:28:29 PM
great idea
05/26/2005 01:27:28 PM
love this picture (pity the wire is on view though!) great shot
05/26/2005 11:55:34 AM
this might have had a more dramatic effect if colored sugar(maybe red) was used. still an excellent shot none the less..9
05/26/2005 08:57:37 AM
This is very cool, only thing I thing that would make this better I feel would be if the cord was not visible, very creative idea as well.
05/26/2005 07:16:11 AM
Creative and great shot! My pick to win!
05/26/2005 03:58:21 AM
Awesome! Very creative. Exciting photograph, well done.
05/25/2005 05:07:36 PM
A fantastic and unique image. I can only say that a faster exposure might make this image sharper and higher impact. I gave you an 8 :)
05/25/2005 03:46:23 PM
great idea, great photograph
05/25/2005 03:41:32 PM
A great response to a magnetic audio signal. The effect is outstanding.
05/25/2005 03:15:26 PM
Great idea and nice capture. Seems to be a liitle blown out though
05/25/2005 03:11:49 PM
Great idea
05/25/2005 02:07:47 PM
DUDE! Like, wickid! LOL, I've seen very few of these shots with matter flung about by a speaker, but this is marvellous! The decreasing concentration of the grains from the central point is perfect, and the naked speaker really gives this image character.
05/25/2005 01:42:25 PM
cool
05/25/2005 01:00:27 PM
Super creative, i like it.
05/25/2005 10:31:19 AM
Is it New Years eve already? Nice capture.
05/25/2005 07:43:42 AM
Great idea, well captured. Maybe I would have tried to hide the wires. . . .
05/25/2005 06:58:01 AM
Imaginative photo.
05/25/2005 02:13:05 AM
does it still work?
05/25/2005 01:39:51 AM
great idea.
05/25/2005 01:39:18 AM
Very creative, this gets an 8 from me! Good job. Nice to see that someone else is thinking outside the box!
05/25/2005 01:27:05 AM
I almost did something like this. Perhaps a faster shutter?
05/25/2005 01:12:03 AM
Just awsome!!! I hope it ribbons! 10
05/25/2005 12:18:21 AM
oohhh man, this is great. i've been extremely into car audio for so many years... you just hit my buttons with this one
05/25/2005 12:11:07 AM
Neat idea
