The subject is a VW New Beetle. It was side lit by a late afternoon sun and front lit by my camera's flash. I then reduced saturation to 0, picked up the contrast a few notches and added a touch of blue. The two things that really pissed me off are that you can see another car being reflected on the driver's side turn signal. I really hope this makes the top 50 percentile.

Thank you all for the votes and the comments. This could have been a better picture if 1) I got rid of that damned car in the blinker. That bothered me like crazy after the week was over. The other thing was that my car wasn't very clean at the time. I have to admit to bug abuse.

Looks very VWish .... watch the reflections on the bumper and signal lens ....
05/12/2002 10:46:00 PM
Clean the car!
05/12/2002 10:36:00 PM
Perfect angle and background, and good choice of B&W. Nice work!
05/12/2002 06:42:00 PM
car reflection in light bothers me, new? Perhaps taking one at a dealer would show less scratches and cleaner (?) - I may have tried the profile view, more car less trees. - like the b&w though.
05/11/2002 08:54:00 PM
Black and white was a good choice to give it a classy air. I like the framing.
05/11/2002 06:39:00 AM
nice angle
05/10/2002 05:49:00 PM
Really liked the feel of this one, but it would have been better if you waxed the car first.
05/10/2002 03:45:00 PM
Nice image
05/10/2002 12:40:00 PM
The sky ruins the picture. you need blue skies with moving clouds.
05/10/2002 02:00:00 AM
interesting reflection of the other car in directional light. Im not sure if it was intentiaonl. it is centered very nicely though, so probably.
are you implying that the Bug is the rreflection of an economy car? Very nice symitry and use of the camera flash
05/10/2002 12:57:00 AM
The new bug is a great subject, but you haven't made the most of it here. The low angle is cool, but the flash glare on the bumper and washed out fender detract. I'd have cropped off the very bottom, as well, since it makes the tires look truncated. The trees in the background don't do much for me, and interfere with the outline of the car. Maybe color would have worked better in that regard.

A little heavy with the lighting on the left, but otherwise, I thought this was a really good picture.
05/09/2002 03:10:00 PM
this has been done before....
05/09/2002 02:40:00 PM
Nicely done.
05/09/2002 01:48:00 PM
Nice sharp focus, well lit and an interesting angle. Good job I could imagine this as an ad in a magazine.
05/09/2002 12:04:00 PM
nice concept and execution
05/08/2002 04:01:00 PM
I like the persective of the car quite a bit but I don't think the backgound does anything for it.
05/08/2002 07:39:00 AM
this is a great photo. im not sure how effective it is at making me want to buy a beetle? ithink the main prob has to do with the trees. would have been stronger with just clear sky or a different background.
05/07/2002 11:47:00 PM
very imposing angle
05/07/2002 10:19:00 PM
you should've cropped the gutter in front of it
05/07/2002 10:12:00 PM
Great prespective on this shot. Too bad the car isn't spotless :)
05/07/2002 08:32:00 PM
Why B&W? The angle is wonderful, as is the framing. But the Beatle is meant to be colorful and fun... Making it B&W mutes that.
05/07/2002 04:06:00 PM
i love this car. i'm not sure i like the angle and the lighting somehow doesn't make it look as sleek as it should.
05/07/2002 12:22:00 PM
Great angle. I really like the b&w effect, too. I would have rather the car reflected in the turn signal be an 'old style' beetle (or not there at all)
05/07/2002 02:22:00 AM
Very slick and commercial, and even beyond that a nice photo because of the lighting and composition. It's a shame though that in this challenge, although people can imitate commercial photography, without lots of post production they can't really get there. The scratches and dust on this car's paintwork would be completely airbrushed out if it was a real advertisement.
05/06/2002 10:48:00 PM
Cool use of B&W. I like the perspective, would have also worked for the previous challenge
05/06/2002 10:27:00 PM
nice photo. i think it would be better if the camera was a little higher.
05/06/2002 07:27:00 PM
I like the idea of the curb in front of the car. It makes it look like a different car. The monochromatic look is also nice. Why did you photograph a dirty car, though? Who would buy it?
05/06/2002 06:52:00 PM
I like this shot. Very metallic and sleek - the sky matches the car and the trees frame the shot very nicely. The whole image looks smooth. nice framing of the car itself as well, and good positioning.
05/06/2002 05:55:00 PM
Interesting reflection in the right light.
05/06/2002 04:58:00 PM
I tried a similar idea with my old vovlvo but it didn't have quite teh same effect!!!!
nice light on the curves
05/06/2002 03:09:00 PM
Nice perspective. I was going to downgrade for the background but on second thought it adds to the reality and tells you it is not a matchbox. 8 from me.
05/06/2002 02:42:00 PM
I used to own this car's father... I had a '68 beetle.. it was my first car. good work!
05/06/2002 01:36:00 PM
I like the close up of the car.. the curvature of the hoodline and roofline are very appealing and give sort of a fish-eye feel to the picture. Also, the color of the sky is washed in a way that works well with the car.
05/06/2002 01:27:00 PM
I like the angle, and I think the shot would work better against a plain sky (no trees). It would also work better with flatter lighting.
05/06/2002 01:24:00 PM
i really like this one, i had an idea along the same lines, but it didn't submit a photo this week. the best part about this picture is the perspective, good job.
05/06/2002 01:20:00 PM
Good photo, boring advertisement. Photo 10 Advert 5 Creativity 7 total 7
05/06/2002 01:13:00 PM
the background detracts from the wonderful lines, a solid windowless building wall would have worked great, as would an empty parking lot to eliminate reflections of neighboring cars (someone holding a large solid sheet open at reflective points would do the same thing) ...also, remove the bug guts
05/06/2002 12:23:00 PM
Not too original, but I do love the car.
Good try.
The trees pull the eye away from the car. Crop the top would help some.
05/06/2002 08:00:00 AM
Nice use of Balck and White.
05/06/2002 07:40:00 AM
scratch on the right side (dirt maybe).
05/06/2002 06:51:00 AM
The angle is artistic and shows enough of the car to get a good idea of what it looks like. I think the camera could've been raised up more though to see more of the car, and to cut off the unused space at the top (the sky).
05/06/2002 12:15:00 AM
From this angle, it looks like a vaccum cleaner! ;)
05/06/2002 03:33:00 PM
A nice composition. The lighting worked against you I think. It might have been better to have had the sun behind you.
