Challenge: From the Ground Up (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-F707
Location: Hickory, NC - Corinth United Church of Christ
Date: Apr 27, 2001
Aperture: F8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/80"
Galleries: Architecture, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Apr 28, 2002

This is a leaded stained glass window on a local church. This window comes very low to the ground and I was able to put the camera right on the glass for the shot. I managed to get decent depth of field at F8 and I could rest the camera on the glass for the 1/80" exposure...

Thanks for the comments on this photo... I chose to do this photo in black and white because the concrete molding in and around the window had a rather ugly green tint due to the lighting and the trees. I ruined this photo by naming it 'Stained Class' which indicates the presence of color... I should have chosen a more appropriate name...

A better centering job would've been more dramatic.

I love the contrast between the textures of the masonry and the glass - very nice!

First Impressions- would have liked to have seen this image symmetrical, or even in colour. BUT You've achieved a more intersting shot with the black and white giving it a gothic feel.

nice comp. angle etc. Subject is some thing not over used. I dig

A nice study in B/W with great DOF. Right on for this challenge.
05/03/2002 06:44:00 PM
Good use of b&w

very cool! 10.

Great shot

Nice photo. I cant help but wonder if it would have been better in color. Maybe changed the composition a bit by bringing the top of the windows down into the image a bit more. Still, very nice work.

hurts my neck

Great composition. Really like how it is somewhat off center. Great job lining up the horizontal. My only question, if this is stained glass why did you decide to go black and white? Don't get me wrong, I love the shot.
05/01/2002 11:48:00 AM
Great depth.
05/01/2002 11:07:00 AM
Nice framing. Matches the challenge, too.

Why "class"? I like this photo a lot. The fact that the line that starts in the lower right corner and goes up to exactly the center at the top seems well thought out. I could wish that that corner was more in focus...don't know if it was an option to use a smaller aperture or not.

Very nice B/W tone, and well sharp. The leading lines do draw the eye away from the nice reflections and up to the less-interesting top of the frame. Maybe a couple of steps further back would have let the glass up top show a little better. Just an idea. Nice work.

I really like this photo! It's classic in black and white!

Definitely fits the contest. Nice texture Would have loved to see this in color before you converted it. Is that a smudge on the glass??? Just kidding, very nice shot!
04/30/2002 03:48:00 PM
one of the few shots that really stand out in this challenge.
04/30/2002 02:06:00 PM
good use of perpective
04/30/2002 01:04:00 PM
fantastic, I love the reflections
04/30/2002 09:20:00 AM
With a title like this one, shouldn't we get to see what color the stain is?
04/30/2002 06:36:00 AM
If you have a picture of this in color, I hope you post it. I like b&w but stained glass is usually so colorful, I might like that better. - this is a great photo though!
04/30/2002 05:17:00 AM
Nice and sharp and great texture/reflections. Stained glass without colour though?
04/30/2002 12:39:00 AM
Great angel. I would have liked to see the color of the stained glass!
04/29/2002 06:19:00 PM
You've probably gotten this already. Stained Glass? I would have liked color.
04/29/2002 05:22:00 PM
i don't get the title, but that's not what matters, this is a great shot
04/29/2002 03:47:00 PM
I like this, just a little dark.
04/29/2002 03:35:00 PM
What a great angle ! Black and white does this justice. The glass has a wonderful texture effect. I feel the height of this window. VERY nice indeed, from the angle to the subject matter.
04/29/2002 03:04:00 PM
wow...this shot made me feel like I was falling...vertigo.....this is really a nice shot...almost looks like pools of water instead of glass.
04/29/2002 02:13:00 PM
This photo REALLY gives the feeling of "ground up"! Great use of perspective~!
04/29/2002 10:19:00 AM
the glare is i little distracting but what can you do.
04/29/2002 10:04:00 AM
Gorgeous! This photo has lots to look at - bold lines, contrasting textures, interesting patterns in the windows, distorted reflections. The stone is very tactile, and the composition is awe-inspiring (as all such windows are designed to be). The lighting seems just right.
04/29/2002 09:39:00 AM
Great use of black and white...composition and perspective are excellent!
04/29/2002 09:16:00 AM
wonderful angle. I keep wanting to see the colour of the glass though
04/29/2002 09:01:00 AM
reflections work well
04/29/2002 08:06:00 AM
I would have liked to see this in color, stained glass usually is so brightly colored.
04/29/2002 03:39:00 AM
I wouldn't have minded seeing this is colour.
