My favorite time of year - beginning of April. The shad a running in the james river. There’s a class 5 rapids that goes through the heart of downtown Richmond. Which is about a 45 minute drive from home. Which is probably a good thing — or Jeff would never see me end of march-beginning of May. There are great blue herons catching fish too big to swallow, and osprey catching fish too large to get out of the river. It’s an amazing show! Bring a chair, a snack and make a morning of it. On one side of the river, is where the GBH’s hang out (great blue herons), the other side of the river, you hike on top of the flood wall. This is how you get the shots of the osprey at eye level - as they’re flying up after catching the fish.

Mariuca commented on the colors in the background - you have the ground, the river, and the lighter color is a bridge going across the river.

Thanks for the comments! This is my joy. Watching life unfold. Getting to really know my subject, watching, anticipating, dreaming of the shot I want to get - being even more excited with this shot I do get. Lamenting the perfect shot that I mistimed and missed completely. It’s fascinating and amazing. And that’s why I do this type of photography - I want you to share the moments that I’m lucky enough to see.

Or you can just come and join me at the james river, in Richmond, in the beginning of April.

Fully awesome image, with great drama, clarity and colors. The clipped wings forces us to confront the content rather than grace and splendor. They both seem to be under a microscope, both given primacy, yet one lives and one dies. Their eyes are the same, as are their vibrant presences. And yet, from our safe and soft perspective, we can recognize the overall pattern woven by nature, the scintillation of life and death, all in their turn. Actually, it's thrust upon us to look or look away.
Wonderful. Personal favorite of the challenge.

These types of images (like ) or all insects that pose for Roz need their own room in our DPC gallery.
Here I am a bit puzzled about the background. Such pretty sky (or water) looks a bit unreal. But what do I know?!
