Oh yeah, one more thing - the main reason I left the handlebars in shot was so that you could work out what the photo was of! :o)

This was my most successful entry so far, and I was much more pleased with it than my previous shots. The three main issues that everyone seems to be mentioning are:

1 - Focus - Unfortunately, the angle I was taking from meant that I couldn't see the LCD, so I was shooting blind. The shot I chose had the best focus and DOF, but it was a tiny bit too close, hence the bottom foreground blur. I'm now taking many more photos, so that I don't have to use ones with flaws.

2 - Angle - Yes, the tyre was leaning very slightly sideways, as I was trying to keep the bike upright at the same time as shooting, which isn't as easy as it sounds! Rotating then cropping the image didn't really work either, which was annoying. Ah well :o)

3 - Aspect - The original shot was much larger than this, and I cropped it down to the one I submitted. However, I had a huge debate with myself over which aspect to use, and since the portrait shot only gave a more out-of-focus bit of tyre at the top, I decided to go with the landscape, which seemed to have a better impact.

Thanks for your comments everyone - I've been hugely motivated by this one! ;o)

The lack of focus on the two pegs closest to the viewer seems distracting to me. The image also seems off-balance.

Great shot, kinda takes you a second to get it. I usually don't like centered images, but it just works so well. Love it!

The DOF is decent... the out of focus handle bars work well, but the bottom of the tire needs to be focused also.

I'm Tyred. I have a soft spot for this one, been there done that. Hurts too. If I had entered, which I may do someday, I had a similar shot in mind.

We figured out that its a motorcycle...
05/03/2002 07:23:00 AM
clever idea and well shot
05/03/2002 12:40:00 AM
interesting. Nice color contrast with the blue sky. hurts my eyes how the bottom front is out of focus. I think it would have been better for this to be in focus as its in the foreground
05/01/2002 06:02:00 PM
Great clairity, interesting shot.
05/01/2002 01:25:00 PM
Nice perspective & DOF. Maybe better as a verticle shot?
05/01/2002 12:12:00 PM
At first I thought this waas a toe tum pole. And then a piece of iron. Now I know what it is. A bicycle tire. Cool. If the handle bars weren't showing I don't think I would have got it.
05/01/2002 11:05:00 AM
Cool idea. Would it be possible to get more of the foreground in focus?
05/01/2002 09:33:00 AM
I'd have backed off the focus just a hair to get the bottom in, even if it meant losing some focus on the top. Sharp stuff.
04/30/2002 04:31:00 PM
nice idea
04/30/2002 04:05:00 PM
Just a tad more DOF and this would be perfect. Nice job.
04/30/2002 10:55:00 AM
great sharpness, composition and lighting. some other people probably said something about the slight assymettry, so I won't ; ) .
04/30/2002 05:21:00 AM
I like this, not an obvious subject and done well. Maybe the foreground section should have been the bit in sharp focus, maybe not.
04/30/2002 04:22:00 AM
can't really say why I like this, but I do. Maybe it's the sharpness of the tread
04/29/2002 05:52:00 PM
Now that's detail. Great shot.
04/29/2002 04:22:00 PM
Great idea, are the tyres "too clean"?
04/29/2002 02:24:00 PM
I had a similar thought, but went another direction. You might have gone with a vertical shot since the tire is vertical ... nice job on the depth of field.
04/29/2002 02:08:00 PM
Nice.
04/29/2002 01:10:00 PM
At first I thought it was a totem pole, then finallly I figured it out. The idea is more interesting than the photograph which need more depth of field or color or something to focus on.
04/29/2002 12:44:00 PM
Nice texture and composition.
04/29/2002 12:26:00 PM
I have no idea what this picture is of, but that doesn't really matter at all. It's very sharp focus, with great texture detail. The background sky is textureless, but it's a nice colorful blue, so that is fine. I'd have to give this photo one of my highest scores of the week for doing a good job with the framing and focus of the foreground and everything else.
04/29/2002 11:51:00 AM
Oh, it's a bike. Nice graphic look. Seems to be ever so slightly tilted to the left?
04/29/2002 10:41:00 AM
Very nice shot! If you had backed away from the tire a little, you may have been able to provide sharper focus in the bottom of this frame. This photo may have also been more dramatic in a vertical orientation with more tire showing...
04/29/2002 10:19:00 AM
very cool, would be even better if the bottom of the tire were more in focus.
04/29/2002 09:11:00 AM
nice treads, photo is slanted a bit, and the handle bars really don't add much
04/29/2002 08:48:00 AM
I like the subject. The image is tilted a bit to the left, and the blury spots are distracting. Good textures on the ......well....whatever it is.
04/29/2002 08:45:00 AM
seems to get sharper and sharper the more I look at it - cool use of depth of field has worked well for this.
04/29/2002 08:25:00 AM
I think this is cool but had to look at it for a long time to figure out what it was due to extreme blur. Maybe if it was showing more detail or the top not so cropped:) Nice idea and capture all the same.
04/29/2002 05:54:00 AM
Cool. I love macrophotography. Wonderful texture.
04/29/2002 03:12:00 AM
This is absolutely fantastic.
