This is completely uncropped -- the jaggies are just what you have to deal with when you're shooting with an under 1 megapixel camera...

A few generic responses to comments:

Over saturation? Possibly.

Over sharpened? Didn't sharpen at all -- actually despeckled a bit to try to soften some of the jaggies. This is just a sub-megapixel camera shot.

Bigger kite in frame? Could have. Didn't want to. This was about letting the viewer fly the kite. I mean, come on, if you're out flying a kite, do you fly it two feet over your head or do you let out ALL the string? Not only that, I wanted this to feel like the kite had room to fly around in the shot.

Crisper, more focused kite string? Like I said, I wanted this to feel like you'd feel if you were there flying the kite. Kite string in the foreground simply isn't going to be in focus in your visual field if you're looking at the kite. On top of that, kite string vibrates in the wind, making it hard to capture crisply. On top of THAT, this is a zoom shot, there's a lot more kite string in this shot than it looks like -- that also does things to your depth of field that are just not possible (or at least extremely hard) to control.

Other than these areas, I don't really know how to respond about having an ugly kite (personally I dig it) or using white kite string (if someone can tell me where to find black kite string, I'll give it a shot) or how this doesn't meet the challenge (in my book, this is from the perspective of the ground up).

I'm a little shocked that this didn't place.

Great shot. The focal point is perfect, as is the vibrant sky.
05/04/2002 07:22:00 AM
This one gives me a stiff neck, but flying a kite does too. Great clouds.
05/04/2002 01:28:00 AM
You make it so dramatic! I want to fly a kite right now!
05/03/2002 07:44:00 AM
well done, colorful, unique. I can almost feel the breeze
05/03/2002 06:19:00 AM
I like the compositing here.
05/02/2002 01:42:00 PM
Nice photo.
05/01/2002 04:25:00 PM
i would have had this as one of my top three if you could have gottne a low angle shot of the person flying th ekite with the kite in the background! Beautiful sky works for you..just needed that extra dimension of the kite flyer.

Great concept, the string and cloudy sky give this shot good perspective.
05/01/2002 03:46:00 PM
Nice shot, would be better if the string would of been in focus closer to the camera.
05/01/2002 02:42:00 PM
I like it!
05/01/2002 12:13:00 PM
if i'd had a kite i would have done this...this is a wonderful shot but i can't give it a higher score because my interpretation of the challenge theme is actually having the camera on the ground and i can't be sure of that from this pic...but i like it!
05/01/2002 11:06:00 AM
Nice. Love the clouds and that the line to the kite is blurred at the bottom. Good work!
05/01/2002 09:13:00 AM
If you weren't stopped all the way down, I'd have gone for an even faster shutter speed to freeze the string at the bottom. I'm sure it was humming pretty good, and it might not have been possible. The line higher up and the edges on the kite are pretty jaggy, but overall well composed and exposed, and having the string lead all the way up to the kite was a great choice.

I really enjoyed the colors in this photo...and the composition is wonderful. Well done!
04/30/2002 07:20:00 PM
Fun pic and nicely done.
04/30/2002 04:42:00 PM
Excellent picture. Very creative. Love the rich colors.
04/30/2002 12:59:00 PM
I think I'd ave prefered it if the string had been black or a little bit more of a contrast to the clouds.
04/30/2002 09:12:00 AM
Great concept! Great cloud formation! Great execution! Great photo!
04/30/2002 09:05:00 AM
Beautiful sky.
04/30/2002 06:58:00 AM
fantastic shot!
04/30/2002 04:50:00 AM
This is very nice! Only thing that could make this shot any better would be some more depth of field to bring more of the kite cord into focus. Good work!

Ah, go fly a kite.....
04/29/2002 09:48:00 PM
Incredible job. Wouldn't change a thing.
04/29/2002 08:46:00 PM
This is very unique. I know that some might say it would be better if it were anlged more to the left. I don't think so myself. I like it just the way it is.
04/29/2002 06:18:00 PM
Great sky!
04/29/2002 05:34:00 PM
good colors, sort of an ugly kite, and the string is out of focus, which probably can't be avoided
04/29/2002 03:53:00 PM
Subject (kite) is too minature.........
04/29/2002 02:09:00 PM
Nifty photo! Love the crispness of the clouds against the blurred kitestring.
04/29/2002 02:02:00 PM
Great shot, I've been wanting to do one like this for a long time, but haven't had the opportunity. A closer zoom of the kite might have been better though, (if the zoom on your camera isn't strong enough, pull the kite in ; )

unique. i like having the kite string in view.
04/29/2002 01:56:00 PM
Great idea!
A little too sharp or not sharp enough?
Beautiful sky, I like it!
04/29/2002 01:53:00 PM
I think you have your focus reversed on this picture. The focal point of the picture IS the kite, but I think you need your up close string to be very focused and detailed, and the kite can afford to be blurry. The clouds as well - I'm not sure why you have them as sharp as they are. They look nice, but they're just a touch of sharpern or two removed from perfect, and have crossed over into distracting. The same goes for the rich blue sky... just sharpened one or two times too many. This picture is well composed though, and very creative, so that adds a good bit of points into it. Nicely done :) and fun, too!

I love the sky. It would have been better if a larger portion of the kite string could have been outside of the camera view because the out of focus portion really takes away from the wonderful backdrop.

Beautiful composition of the sky and clouds. I really like this one.
04/29/2002 12:58:00 PM
Nice pretty sky, I might have wished for the kite to fill a little more of the frame.

Beautiful clouds...I like this idea.
04/29/2002 10:28:00 AM
i had the same idea, just no kite. the texture of the clouds really adds to the photo. if there were one thing that i would try and improve upon, it would be the string.

I CAn almost eat those clouds.
04/29/2002 08:53:00 AM
So simple...such color..nicely done !
04/29/2002 08:45:00 AM
Nice composition, great colors. Your saturation is perfect.
04/29/2002 08:37:00 AM
Nicely done! interesting clouds and subject. Hard to do, but would have prefered the kite lower and filling the frame more.

04/29/2002 06:38:00 AM
simple but effective. Would have loved to have seen the hand holding the kite - make the viewer feel like they were holding it themselves

...and so is your photo, clear. Congratulations!
04/29/2002 02:45:00 AM
Hehe, weather sucked here, but this is my EXACT idea... you beat me too it. great job.
04/29/2002 01:24:00 AM
Crisp! I like how the string looks like a jet trail.
04/29/2002 12:54:00 AM
Great concept. The photo looks way over sharpened and over saturated to my eye. Good job nontheless.
