This is a two image composite, one of the Merced River around 10 miles south of Yosemite and another of El Capitan taken the same morning. I made a 3am run up to the Valley to catch the aftermath of a snowfall but my best pictures were taken once I left the valley and headed home. We made it to the valley floor at 5am and it was deserted. By the time the sun started coming up, the photogs were rolling in. It's a magical place and except for very cold feet and hands, winter is a great season. The fog brought mystery to an otherwise cloudless morning.

I always feel a little strange compositing a landscape image from two totally different places. But, for a DPC extended challenge, I put aside my unease.

Thank you for viewing.

Whoa, I just realized it's a composite :-) THAT explains why I've never seen a view like this of El Capitan before :-) Well done!

Wow Mark, great job of making it magnificent and realistic at the same time! You even made El Capitan reflect in Merced river )). Congrats on your win!

Yep, I called it. And how could you not. IT is a sublime image. And it looks real (if that makes sense) it is one of those moments, that you turn a corner and suddenly "BAM" you see something like this, a once in a lifetime moment. That is what makes this whole thing real to me and everyone else who voted. Fabulous job!

This was an absolute, guaranteed win in my book. I've been in Yosemite too many times to count, so it's hard to take my breath away with a shot from there :-)

this is a standout image in the challenge .. the lighting on that cliff is to die for .. not literally of course .. if you were climbing it .. ;)
the mist .. the serenity .. the muted colours ... very special .. :)
