THis is terrific, Richard. You always manage the blue of these birds so well, and the sense of frozen motion here is just spot-on. Even the distracting element is working for you here, is what the challenge asked for. Well done!
I agree with the post not being a distracting element -- it tells the story. That being said, what a truly wonderful capture! I'm so glad to have seen this shot. Truly magnificent!
The ultra high shutter speed really does allow a unique view of this such pretty bird. I would guess that the snow acted as a giant light box allowing you such a fast shutter speed - really impressive.
Yes, exactly right. It was a unique lighting situation. Surrounded by snow with the filtered sunlight over the back of my left shoulder in early afternoon.

What a wonderful capture, although I'm not sure I would really consider the post a distracting element. The head of the bird is on the centerline so I'mm put you down for breaking that rule.
