With Halloween approaching, my wife put a pumpkin on our front steps. It was an uncarved pumpkin, but a crafty squirrel changed that. Before long he had eaten a significant portion of the pumpkin's outer skin. I was assuming he'd found what he wanted and wasn't going in... but that too changed. As I write this I am a few hours away from removing the pumpkin before it collapses. You can read more about this squirrel and his pumpkin (with more photos) at //www.geofffox.com/MT/archives/cat_the_squirrel_chronicles.php

Our pumpkins suffered the same fate - when the squirrels had done the hard work, the chipmunks snuck inside, stuffed their cheeks with the seeds, and scooted. This HAS to be the origin of the pumpkin carving tradition. No doubt about it! Since i have had chickens I have figured out the origin of the easter egg hunt. In the spring, the chickens start laying their eggs outside, instead of in the hen house. They hide them everywhere and if you want breakfast (or dont want skunks) you send the kids out to look for them.

Great picture!

This photo was one in a series I took over several days. In fact, my pumpkin and this squirrel's desire to make it his own, has been documented in my blog //www.geofffox.com/MT/archives/cat_the_squirrel_chronicles.php.

This particular photo, not the sharpest I took (as was noted by some astute commenters), was actually shot through the window alongside my front door. The day was gloomy and rainy. I wish there had been more light.

Thanks to all for looking and commenting. Taking photos to satisfy a challenge has become a fun obsession.

Mmm, chow time. I think placing the squirrel out of the center of the shot would give it a better composition.

Too funny! Cute subject with great colors, but focusing looks to be off a bit.

overall appealing photo.
you should digitally add eyes on the face of the pumpkin to make it look as though the pumpkin is 'having lunch', if you know what i mean. whos eating whom. i'd be worth some laughs.

GREAT photo! If it just had a little more detail in the squirrel's fur, I would score even higher.
