Challenge: Guess Your Score (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D7000
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6G
Date: Jan 26, 2015
Aperture: 5
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/640
Date Uploaded: Jan 26, 2015

Taken through a wire fence at the Naples Zoo in Florida while on vacation.
Editing is a slight contrast and saturation bump with a crop since I only had access to my inlaws laptop with ArcSoft photo Suite for edits.

[Feb. 5th, 2015 02:37:59 PM]

as most people are pointing out in comments, this is "a bit soft" or "not focused on the eyes".

I was shooting this at the lowest f-stop my lens would go (which was f5 when zoomed in) because of the wire caging (which is visible in the bokeh).
The tiger was only about 7 or 8 feet behind the wire, so I was shooting from about 20 feet back (from the wire) to ensure they would 'disappear' as much as possible. As a result, my focus was getting the nose, or behind the face and everything was blurry.

I wish I had a better zoom lens, one that could be as tack-sharp as this picture should be captured in, but I don't, and I didn't have my computer with me half a continent away for edits, but even then it wouldn't have been able to pull out the detail that should be in the eyes (some topaz would've helped though).
I felt 5.5 was the lofty side of where this could end up, I was originally hoping this might get up to a 6 (when only seeing it in-camera), as some of you have also mentioned would be doable if the focus/sharpness was there.
I also wish that I could be in a position to be able to get this image without having to shoot through smudged plexiglass or wire fencing, but those aren't on the table for me either....so i'll happily accept my mid 5's and confirmation that everything I know wasn't perfect would be changed the same way by others if they were there and had the ability to change what I would have changed.

At least I know I'm getting better in my skills to know where my images are going off the rails :)

I would have enjoyed a bit more light on the face rather than the one bright spot on his back. Pretty cat though.

you will get higher, 5.8. In spite of the extra hair colouring.

It looks so startled! Nice color if a bit over saturated. Too soft for me. I want super sharpness in the eyes. Gave it a six and I don't think it will hit that. 5.8

I gave it a six and I think it could get there. 6

Now that is a big puddy cat! Could be a bit sharper in focus 5.1

It's a bit soft, I would guess 5.1

I can see the out of focus cage and your title works well as a consequence. I think the focus looks slightly off and the framing is rather eclectic. I think you'll get a little less at about 5.3.

Love the moment...good colors, seems a bit soft where it needs to be sharp. 5.9

I think you're about right. The focus is too soft for DPC to go higher, but they do like bright colors. They're kind of like bass in that way. Just put a shiny lure in the water and BLAM!!! 5.5

very nice portrait of that majestic creature
I wonder what is the part with the most shrapness - maybe the nose? It's not the eye..
but since this is whining at a high level - 6 from me , predict 5.3

I really like the colour in this, I like the back ground blur and the sharpness of the whiskers. Nicley exposed through out I'll a gree with that 5.5 and vote a six here, Good Luck

The face says a lot, but I'm not sure of the composition. I don't know that looking out of the frame on the right works. I'm curious what it would have looked like with more of a square crop on the right and the face brightened a bit. With the light on the left side, it shows just how harsh the lighting is. With that cropped off and it lightened a bit, it would stand out so much that it's difficult lighting. Guessing 5.4

If the focus was tack sharp, I would estimate 6+, but since it's a bit fuzzy, it will end at 5.73

Love the bokeh, but for the focus issues a straight 5.0

The focus seems a bit off on the Tigers eyes but still a great capture. I estimate a final score of 5.7
  Photographer found comment helpful.
02/03/2015 08:53:30 PM
There seems to be a certain softness to this image - was it shot through glass? - as the important eye focus is missing. The white balance seems a little cold as the tiger's whites are a little blue but that could be this (uncalibrated) monitor. 5.68

close to what I think as well Nice animal photo though

Hello, I voted a few days ago, now returning for comments. I think that you estimated your score well, I gave you a six and I predict that you will finish at 5,6044
With a little more details (sharpness), it would have been over 6

But I wish it could have been sharper.
