I love this photo! The sepia gives it such a nice 'old timey' feel. Also the lighting is wonderful. Good shot!

Great set up, the tones of the shot are nice and give a good effect and set the mood well. As you said earlier, you couldn't write with the quill, but it is still my suggestion for improvement.

Congratulations, we were obviously on the same wave length (I think). You achieved the look I was after, although if I could be a tiny bit picky, I think one or two words on the paper might have improved it but that's only my opinion. well done, great photo. (I gave it a 7 by the way.)

Congratulations on your ribbon, one thing I thought was strange when I saw this shot is that you can't write left handed with a quill without making a mess. I still like it though well done.

Thanks Guys and Gals!! :o) all I can say is WOO HOO!!

and to answer a few questions:

It would have been nice to see the feather tip, but this was one long quill and the world isnt perfect hehe. I had other shots with the entire quill, but there were problems with those shots. I did use neat image, its my downfall as usual, I over use it. I like the smooth effect, others don't. I didn't write on the paper because the quill does not write. This quill set is special to me and I did not want to ruin it, so the ink is water with blue food coloring (vial washed out great, cork has blue stains, bums me out) and the tip of the quill was painted with blue fingernail polish, which I later removed. I hadn't decided to go sepia till I did it and liked the effect. I also only had one sheet of parchment paper and I decided it was better to leave it blank than to mess it up and then have to cover it up. I really wish I could have spot edited and removed the spots on the candle holder. I also didnt decide to use a hand until the last minute. I had the quill lying on the paper in 75% of my shots but my son Jordan came into the room and I had him pose for the shot. Thanks Jordan and Thanks to all who voted and commented, not just on this shot, but on my other work as well.

Guess you should have written something on the page! No really, I like the look of this picture! It must be the lighting or something but very athentic. No words for it, just very nicely done.

I like the lighting and mood of this shot. Sepia really helps create the atmosphere.

I know your title depicts the beginning of a story, but I wonder whether having few quill marks on the paper would have added to the scene.

Ordinarily I'm not very impressed with these set-up shots. But this is outstanding. You've done an excellent job of capturing the candle flame, which is always very tricky for me.

Simply gorgeous. Perhaps a bit smooth, but could be an effect of the lighting. A very classic moment. Perhaps having a bit of writing already on the parchment could have sold the "communication" part of it a little better.. otherwise I'm left thinking, "they're *about* to communicate.. but.." That's just a personal observation though, nothing to dock marks on.
