Simple setup: My oldest daughter wearing my grandfather’s hat holding my flash umbrella with my flash a couple feet in front of her pointing up at the umbrella. Every once and a while a picture turns out like the idea in my head. However, this one almost did not come together.

My youngest daughter has a photography internship with a local high school sports website and recently stumbled in the stands while shooting a basketball game. Fortunately, she was OK but my T2i did not survive. On Black Friday Canon had a sale on refurbished models and I ordered myself an early Christmas present. It was delivered the last day of this challenge, and I was anxious to try it out on an Umbrella shot right after work. Unfortunately, when I arrived home with it I found out my daughter needed the camera to shoot another basketball game. By the time she was done and I got my hands on the camera again it was getting late. Thankfully the camera had survived and my oldest daughter agreed to be my guinea pig. So, we headed out to a spot on the beach. Standing in the dark trying to figure out an unfamiliar camera and get a good focus was a challenge. We rushed home and, thanks to Basic Editing, got it edited and uploaded with a little time to spare.

After helping me with the shoot my daughter suggested the title. While I figured it might confuse most voters, I could not refuse her. The image reminded her of a favorite scene from one of her very favorite movies -- Miyazaki’s anime classic, My Neighbor Totoro. You can check out the scene here.

The score has sparked a sibling rivalry at my house. This shot including my oldest daughter has been hovering around my best score I have received for a shot including my youngest daughter. There has been plenty of trash talking. This shot was winning yesterday, but last day voting has weighed it down. It looks like my younger daughter's shot will continue to reign. Either way I am quite happy.

Sorry. I had a Luminosity layer and did not realize that with Basic Editing you can only have Adjustment layer. I should have know better.

Bummer on the DQ, but what a great shot! I wasn't familiar with the movie that donated the title, but I felt it fit somehow. Where else would you wait for a cat bus, but at night in the middle of nowhere?

Sorry about the DQ. I'm not much of a post processor, so don't know about the technical issues. Just wanted to say it's still a cool shot all the same.

Oh no, that sucks! It sounds like it was just a slight technicality on how a tool was used. It still holds the red ribbon in my opinion. More importantly, what effect does this have on the sibling rivalry?

For me this photo stands out because of the lighting and the wonderful composition. I love the coat your daughter is wearing and the way the grass reaches up to frame her bottom half - just excellent. Thank you for including your camera settings and your lighting details too.

great story and great image - one of my top picks in this challenge. I love overhead lighted shots at night and this is really well done considering the editing limitations. congrats!

Have definitely not heard of that story. And wow, what camera drama for you to get to this point. Pretty cool shot. Glad to see the kids are really getting into it.

Congrats again on another ribbon! :)

Great use of negative space and the contrast between the umbrella and the sky. Mysterious. I wonder where she is waiting and what she is waiting for.

By far the best in the challenge. The only thing I don't like very much is the brightness of the umbrella - a little too much.
