This is a very simple photograph. I purchased a cheap clock and removed the rounded glass face and the chrome outer ring. I learned quickly that chrome doesn't expose well in the dark and that rounded glass produces a glare no matter where you are or where the lighting is coming from. I moved the camera in close and used the macro mode. My camera is about 2 feet away from the face of the clock. I adjusted the time on the clock to 5:00 so I could capture the second hand passing across the 5:00 mark showing a transition from my daily trudge at work to my daily play routines. This is an 8-second exposure at F2.

This is one we can all learn from. Thanks John!

This shot definitely deserved a ribbon of some sort. It was too perfect not to.
04/29/2002 04:50:00 AM
Thanks for all the comments on this photo. It *is* an 8 second long exposure. I got 9 ticks of the second hand because I opened the shutter between ticks... My primary objective with this photo was to see if I could produce something that would not score any ones. I failed.. lol.. I got very few negative comments this time and I'm very pleased with the results. I think the primary problem with this shot is that a few did not understand the transition.
04/29/2002 04:32:00 AM
There is no way this deserved any ones. You should have been in the top three.
04/29/2002 02:44:00 AM
The only thing I don't get is if this an eight second exposure how'd you get the little hand 9 times?

I love the simplicity of this shot.. I think it makes it stand out from the others. The idea is awsome as well.
04/28/2002 10:51:00 AM
Excellent. This one got my 10 vote this week!
04/28/2002 06:21:00 AM
great shot!
04/27/2002 08:37:00 PM
Definitely a site for sore eyes, and a welcome "transition" for most of us!
04/27/2002 03:07:00 PM
nice idea, I think it would have worked better if the second hanbd had been captured away from the bigger hands so we could see more of it. Of course it wouldn't be on the dot of 5 then would it though.
04/27/2002 10:50:00 AM
Cool multiple exposure, wish my camera would do that. Did you try different angles for a more dynamic composition. Perhaps real low near the "5" with a wide angle lens would work to emphasize the hour in transition.
04/27/2002 08:41:00 AM
great image of short time, i like the second hand moving from one hour to the next, very subtle but really great
04/26/2002 08:15:00 PM
Cool shot. I like the dark on dark, it really makes the white stand out, and I really like the effect of the second hand.
04/26/2002 07:32:00 PM
ahh... the best time of the day.
04/26/2002 05:37:00 PM
It's an intertesting picture but the only clue to a clear transition is in the title.
04/26/2002 02:57:00 PM
good job, good clarity - like it.
04/26/2002 01:44:00 PM
My impression changed a lot once I could see the second-hand on the full-size image (didn't notice it on the thumbnail).
04/25/2002 04:54:00 PM
If the clock is right, that's a nine second exposure, amazing how you got the lighting right! Great shot.
04/25/2002 02:53:00 PM
nice one
04/25/2002 12:12:00 AM
Great shot, I really like this one, was it a 10 sec exposure or strobes?
04/24/2002 10:44:00 PM
Very good.
04/24/2002 06:08:00 PM
A novel idea, simple but elegant.
04/24/2002 12:42:00 PM
i hope people realize what a pain in the ass this kind of shot can be. way cool
04/24/2002 07:39:00 AM
nice shot. feels like the clock isnt perfectly vertical. i bet some peopel will harass you for the blurring of the second hand but I think that makes the pic. good work.
04/24/2002 05:29:00 AM
My favorited transition of the day. This is a well done photo.
04/24/2002 03:46:00 AM

04/23/2002 09:22:00 PM

04/23/2002 07:50:00 PM

04/23/2002 05:33:00 PM
Very clear. Nice Composition.
04/23/2002 05:23:00 PM
A amazing capture. I hope to be able to do this someday. The clock and background seem to merge as one. GREAT transition.
04/23/2002 04:58:00 PM
People have *really* been learning from their stopped-motion experience. Very nicely done. Was that using something like an anti red-eye flash?
04/23/2002 01:06:00 PM
I think this is the best use of the long exposure in this set of images
04/23/2002 11:58:00 AM
Very good impression of transition.
04/23/2002 10:24:00 AM

nnnnnnnice cccclarity in the B & W. Good centering.
04/23/2002 04:02:00 AM
Very simple idea, but really well executed, love the simplicity of the shot. Also like the fact you waited for the second hand to be at the top. A small detail, but makes a big difference. Nice picture
04/22/2002 08:10:00 PM
cool looking clock, that's about it
04/22/2002 08:07:00 PM
Very simple, very effective. I really like this.
04/22/2002 04:07:00 PM
A picture is worth a thousand words, starting with "flawless". . .
04/22/2002 02:52:00 PM
Neat! Love the colors
04/22/2002 01:35:00 PM
I like the multiple images of the second hand.
04/22/2002 01:26:00 PM
Fantastic! Would make a great framed photo. Can you make a high definition version available? One of my 10 best.
04/22/2002 01:01:00 PM
Nice effect with the second hand. I wish I left work at 5pm. :)
04/22/2002 01:00:00 PM
A little confused about the transition but nice clock. is it for sale?
04/22/2002 12:45:00 PM
Hey.. I totally relate! good shot overall.
04/22/2002 12:05:00 PM
love it! Wonder how it would look on a white background? very nice photo and idea.
04/22/2002 10:36:00 AM
I wish my camera would let me do something like that well other than compositing the photos.
04/22/2002 08:19:00 AM
good example.. i like it
04/22/2002 07:50:00 AM
Wow. Perfect exposure to show the transition. I saw the thumbnail and didn't think much of it, but this shot was very nicely done.

Everytime I look back at this shot, I like it more and more.
04/22/2002 07:42:00 AM
I like thge movement of the second hand. Nice touch
04/22/2002 07:30:00 AM
Very clean shot - love the tonal ranges and how you've caught the second hand so well balanced. Lovely.
04/22/2002 06:05:00 AM
Nice effect with the second hand.
04/25/2002 12:40:00 PM

Nice photo. A bit dark, but a neat shot!
04/22/2002 02:44:00 AM
Took me a while to figure out what was so special with this one, there was something about it.. It's totally worth a good rating !
