I konw I didn't post last week, that's because I didn't lose any, again. This week I've been working my butt off (probably literaly) in the heat, so I finally lost a couple of pounds!! I've lost a total of 8 pounds, only 7 more to reach my goal of 15!
06/13/2008 11:23:16 AM · #277
Starting weight - 156.

This week 150.2

Same as last week. Didn't gain though, so that's good!

My goal is 135 by August 30th (beach trip)!!

Sha-weet. :) I've lengthened out my bicycle commute to and from work so that I'm biking about 30 miles a day. Beyond the weight loss, I'm getting back into shape, which makes the bicycling a lot more fun.

-.2 this week...total -8

I had a bad experience this week...thought I would share. My Dr referred me to the Diabetes/Endocrinology Dept. I had my appoinment on Tuesday. I guess I just didn't get it...

The nurse practioner first asked me about my weight loss goal...when I told her my Dr wanted 30 off of me by the end of August, she was appalled. She said that was too aggressive and my Dr was expecting too much of me (contridicting my Dr is probably not a good idea!). Then she asked me no less than five times "what do you want from us?". I don't know about you...but, I don't even know what Endocrinology covers!! Then she decided, after only meeting me for 15-minutes that I must be depressed and need services that they do not provide. "Does depression run in your family? Are you an emotional eater?". And her exact comment was..."Beyond telling you 'not' to put the food in your mouth, I don't think we can do anything for you". Then she said "I guess, I can set you up to see a dietician". At that point, I told her that wouldn't be necessary...I stood up...pointed at her and said "were done here"...and walked out of her office. As I walked down the hallway, she trailed behind trying to give me directions to the exit. I never looked back and all I could think was, now you want to help me!

When you go to see a health care professional, you expect guidance, leadership and solutions or the very least suggestions. To endlessly ask me "what do you want from us?" does not provide any kind of help! I don't think I've ever been so frustrated or discouraged. I have contacted my Dr and will be working exclusively with her...needless to say, she's not very happy.

I think the thing that surprised me the most, was her attitude that if you have weight issues you must have mental health issue as well. So, based on that...we all need therapy...I just thought you should know! lol

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience! 30 lbs actually isn't that aggressive if you're border-line diabetic. My mom turned out to be diabetic and her doctor suggested the south beach diet. She did it for 2 weeks and lost 15 lbs. She then quit the south beach diet (it's not a good idea to stay on that diet for very long) and went to the dietician. Our local grocery store has one now and she holds meetings that my mom attends. She's lost 20 lbs and her diabetes is under control.
Different things work for different people, you just have to try things out and see what works best for you.

Also, I would let the dr. that referred you know about the experience. S/He needs to know and either put a but in the endocrinologist's ear how you were treated or find another specialist to refer people to.

After stewing about it for two days, I called my Dr's office and told her nurse what occurred. She was very sorry for me and stunned that the nurse practioner would contradict my Dr. The nurse said she would make sure my Dr knew about this and they would be taking it further. We decided I would work closely with my Dr for now and maybe in the future look at a dietician for more guidance.

Illegitimi non carborundum!

When my doctor and friend told me I was morbidly obese and that I could either change on my own terms, or deal with diabetes & heart trouble WHEN it happened, it was a no-brainer.

I went from 7500-10,000 calories a day, eating high-fat, high-carb, processed foods to a healthy, low-carb, low fat & salt diet of 1500-2000 calories a day......instantly, on an overnight transition.

How could the weight do anything BUT peel off fast?????

You wanna guess HOW fast that first 55 pounds came off?

How about 6½ weeks?

You wanna guess how many people told me that I was losing weight too fast and that it was unhealthy?

Thing is, trust your own judgement, and your doctor, don't lie to yourself, and make the commitment to yourself and your health, and the pounds WILL peel off. It can't help but come off fast at first if you are carrying more than you should. You'll reach a balance over time, but in the meantime, screw what anyone has to say in the way of advice other than the health care professional that you utilize for your regular person.

This is about you, your health, and your state of mind. And your state of mind gets much better as your physical health does....
Oh.....make sure you tell your doctor as you explained to us, your experience.....he/she'll want to know!

I'm not sure what happened this week.....I weighed myself four times just to make sure.....

I have lost over 100 pounds since the outset of my diet that started December 4, 2007.

I am pretty happy about that!

Scott, I'm having trouble finding the link to the chart......are you still slaving over that?

ETA: In case I didn't happen to mention it before......I think it's awesome that you take the time to do these things like the charts and the FSM.....even though I suck at Free Studies.......8>)

So far you are ahead. That makes me 7 total.

For all you armchair nutritionists out there --
If I lose more than a pound or so a week, I keep a tremendous headache. I jokingly call it "caloric deprivation" headaches, but they are so annoying. Not as bad as a migraine, but tylenol (which is what usually helps anything I suffer from) won't touch them.

Am I getting dehydrated?
Do I need vitamins?

I'm trying to eat fairly healthy foods, with a minimum of sweets/chocolate, etc. Could it be withdrawal?

The good thing is that when I have a headache, I know I'm going to post a loss. :)

SO I missed last week because I was out of town photographing a wedding and generally not sticking to my routine... I gained weight, (no surprise there)... this week I've got myself back to 223.30 which was no small feet as I was at 225 when I came home monday.

If you don't usually drink caffienated drinks and eat a lot of chocolate when not dieting, it may be caffiene withdrawal. You may be dehydrated; drink three litres of water a day (six bottles of water).

Still losing! I mean my challenge entries, but fortunately, weight too :)

And switching to a chart too since there's no group chart anymore (not faulting Scott--I think it's a crazy amount of work to do that!)

I'm happy with my progress. I just hope I can keep it going down!

ETA: I just checked the finish date, and at 1 lb per week, I'm not going to make my 15 lb goal by 8/2. But I think 1 lb a week is a healthy amount, so I'm ok with that. Just means I won't finish (if I can keep this up) for another 8 weeks. And ideally, I'd like to go further than I thought I could accomplish, to about 165!

The key motivator for me is to get my Cholesteral down again. I had 198 total (considered high) in my 2006 physical (HDL: 53/LDL: 122/VLDL: 23), but the 2003 physical was considered normal (Total: 174, HDL: 44, LDL: 110, VLDL: 20). My cardiologist wanted to put me on medication based on the last report. I prefer to do it naturally, so that's my biggest motivation--we'll see in about three weeks, I'm due for a blood test and physical.
