I like interesting pictures. Images capturing a certain mood or a special view on things around, maybe an interesting pattern or in an unusal style. I like viewing such pictures but also have the urge to create something myself.
I seldom photograph for documenting things, e.g. for remembering a trip or people or other personal memories. It's more like to create something new and different than what you normally see in everyday life. That's why I like pictures with a visual impact. My last photo is a good example of what I mean :)

| A personal creative outlet that permits me to believe that I can be artistic, even when it is not my nature to be so inclined. Also, I love the toys. |

Have you ever wished you could preserve that special moment in time?
Remember thinking to yourself, "if only I had a camera"?
This is why I have once again gotten back into photography.
I want to enjoy those moments and memories in time again. I want to be able to remember that morning when I saw that one of a kind sunrise or the family outing we had before Dad passed away. One word describes it for me... "Memories". |

About a year ago, my friend introduced me to "American Beauty" - one of the greatest movies ever made. This is why I do photography:
"It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it. And this bag was, like, dancing with me. Like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. And that's the day I knew there was this entire life behind things, and... this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. (Photography's) a poor excuse. But it helps me remember... and I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in."
In the last 18 months, I've taken approximately 14,000-16,000 pictures and kept nearly 2500 of them. I've learned all I can about photography, which included being here for the last 3 weeks. I read every site I can find about photog and I want to keep learning. There's SO MUCH BEAUTY that I feel like I'm going to just burst if I don't keep some of it - to remember.

Photography is something like eating for me. Sometimes it's the visual aroma itself, junk food of color/texture/form. Other times it's a mental percept that pushes the ingredients together into a preconceived entree. Sort of looking for that taste until the craving is satisfied. My images are based on a whim or flash of inspriration of the moment most of the time. I feel like a kid slurping a big gooey bowl of messy spaghetti. Just too much fun playing around. Most of my images are as "personal" as a flatulence ... something intimate you only share with family and comfortable friends. And everyone knows that eating is one of life's greatest pleasures.

I take some photographs because the scene, event, etc has captured my eye and my imagination.
I take other photographs because I believe I can turn them into reasonable works of art (or into a challenge entry).
Finally, I take other photographs because someone pays me to.

Hmm. Well, because I like to remember each moment and revisit it. ... and because I cannot draw or paint :P
By the way, tonight I just succeeded in creating my very first DVD slideshow all put to music with nice transitions! Now my friend can enjoy her daughter's 7th birthday party and her wonderful child ways (which won't last long!) at home on her television *grin*.
... on to the next! :0)

No seriously...
I've been into photography since I was a small kid - and I begged for my first SLR when I was 12. Used it a LOT too and spent ages learning what everything meant - all that wonderful new terminology - aperture, DOF, fish-eye!!! Set up a dark room at school (in a disused kiln room) and took an extra school exam in photography, non taught. How sad is that?!
I really love travel photography the most. I don't mean pictures of spouse in front of Trevi fountain/ Eiffel Tower/ marauding lion...
I am currently even more inactive in terms of DPC entries than before we picked up the new digital before Xmas because I am concentrating on taking photos for the evening class projects.
It's BW film stuff which I do love. Digital is great and I am happy to be digital too but I also love the thrill of a physical darkroom.
In the mean time I learn more and more just be viewing the work of all of the entrants here and also by commenting on images here.
I know there has been more than one time that I've been wondering around with a friend and oohed and aahed over something I've noticed that I think would make a great photo only to have the friend state they hadn't even noticed it.
So perhaps it does help me see in a different way?
OR perhaps I already saw in a different way which is why I was so strongly drawn to photography as a kid...

Bingo... That's why I do it too.
Initially, the only folks that saw them were Friends and family. Then a few months ago, I found a web site of like minded lunatics, so my audience has grown :)

I guess photography has become the outlet for my creative talents (or lack thereof) since I packed in DJing. It also gets me out of the house a lot more often where I would previously have been sat in front of a computer/pair of turntables/TV all weekend.
I show my photos to friends & work colleauges, oh and to 200+ people here every week : ) |

My interest started with a really simple digital camera that I took along with me when I traveled on business to snap a few shots of the places I saw.
Then I looked at my pictures and thought "that's not what I saw there at all."
So I started hanging out in places like this to get tips, reading books/magazines, and taking more and more photos.
Soon enough I realized that it had become a full-blown obsession. |

Hmmm... why do I do anything? That's a tough question. I suppose that photography is my hobby. Since it is my hobby, it is my 'escape' from the daily grind. I do it for relaxation mainly. It also gives me an excuse to go places I have never been before looking for photo opportunities.
Gordon said it well also... As I have developed my interest in photography, I have learned to see things that I would have otherwise overlooked...
I don't really show my work to many people other than here at dpc anymore. I have all but stopped uploading to photosig and deviantart. I don't upload to bestfoto anymore and I only occasionally submit anything to digitalphotocontest. I keep most of my stuff in my pbase folder that is linked below...

Because I can.
Of course that's a matter of opinion, but I've always been a bit of a perfectionist. If I'm going to do something then I want it done well. If I didn't think that I could take good photographs and get better at it then I don't think I'd want to do it. I also love art, traveling, the outdoors, and history. Photography just seems to fit. |

I love to take photographs so
1. I can capture that moment in time and have a visual memory either on paper or in the computer
2. Take an ordinary object ... look at it a different angle and create a beautiful piece of art with it
3. Over all it's really fun and a great conversation piece when you are out in public either laying on the ground or even just positioning yourself all weird - just to get that great shot
Photography has been in my life for as long as i can remember ... but just recently it's kinda taken over this past year ... I agree with Gordon in that I certainly "see things" differently ... it's just a great hobby! And i'm glad we can all share our experiences through this site

One of my main reasons for taking photos is that I can't draw. Also because it's so easy now: digi, laptop, and hey presto! Add a bit of web space, and you have your own gallery too. The picture=1000 words thing is most cliched, but remains true, also.
Mostly because it's fun though - especially when you see that moment and you have your camera with you and it turns out the way you wanted it to.

| I take photos to complement my 3D work. It's nice to get out into the real world and experience it in all its chaotic, decaying, REAL beauty. 3D modeling and animation is what I love, but it feels too controlled and stifling sometimes. |

To record the beauty I see around me, which I never saw before I bought my digital camera.
Very often now, I see something, for example, like the frozen mist on the trees around my house this morning against a brilliant blue sky, and think what an awesome photo it would make. Sometimes the photo works, most times it doesn't, but that's due to my inexperience with correct camera settings in general.
I have found that taking photos is a wonderful creative outlet for me. I've always wanted to be artistic (either in a form of art or in music), and so far this has been the most successful medium for me.
I show my photos to friends and family, but my partner sees all of my work and provides valuable input.

guess I really had not thought of it... it's just plain fun... it gives me a chance to express myself artistically in a medium I think I can do well at... I have a long way to go, but I think DPC has really helped! I love to share the shots with friends, family, and co-workers... they are probably tired of the my emails by now though... :o)
