First, you have to decide why you are here. Which, in your case, seems to have been done and it appears it is to get a ribbon. Fine and well, I've no quarrel with that.

If you want a ribbon, then study the styles and techniques of the previous winners. This will give you an idea of what the voters like. Then start shooting and processing in the style(s) that score well here. It may mean that your personal tastes, style, and values must be set aside in order to achieve this. That may be the price of winning a ribbon. (Some are lucky enough to have a native style that appeals to the masses. We call them ribbon hogs. ;-)

In the end it is up to you. Shoot for score, or shoot for your own artistic vision. Both are valid. Both are worthy. The first would be a photographer that shoots assignments for clients. The second would be someone aiming to have their own personal shows. I do not value one above the other.

Note the recurring theme here, that at least the same thing has been said at least a couple of times by now. Pay attention!

One thing I like to do after a challenge with one of my shots has ended, is to go right to the very last page - where the dqs and brown ribbons lurk - and work your way forward from there, to the first page. The differences between what scores in the top 20, top 50 and bottom 20 should quickly become obvious.

LOL, when I first saw the thumbnail just now, I though that the parachuter was a piece of dirt on my screen, and tried vigorously cleaning it off!
It was only after it was not moving that I realized it was part of the image.
Up close its completely obvious of course :-P

HAHAHAHA,

well that would explain the low score.........LMAO

what can I say, it was my first entry. (not that my B&W landscape is doing much better LOL)

2002, we are now 2010, Paul, don't you think you should update your camera?? Technology has moved on a bit since you started here. Although, I have been here a long time with still no ribbon, but then I have a good excuse, my photos are pretty crappy:))

As long as we are at it, Here's my first. Did decently for a first challenge, especially since I didn't even shoot it with the challenge in mind. Followed it up with a 4-point-something, however.

This was my first entry - tried the Best of 2007 for my first challenge. Did not enter another challenge for 8 months, did two free study's and then a friend of mine njsabs encouraged me to shoot for challenges. It was a lot of fun, I remember going out and doing street photography for the first time and thinking - this could really help me grow as a photographer. Now along came DPL and I am loving the extended camaraderie of being on a team and brainstorming, I am so glad it was resurrected.

edited to correct image number :-)

I'm not far off. I got a 6.07 for my first entry in the best of 2008...

Since then i've learnt to see the spiritual vacuity of ribbons and now only enter DPC for a laugh when i'm on drugs.

never really.

Probably the reason for this is that i have never tried to win a ribbon. if trying to win a ribbon means putting lot of efforts into it.

The main reason is i could never think myself to be as good as i could win a ribbon. If i were good i would probably try to win but until then no trials for me.

I don't enter to win anymore...maybe at first I thought it was a possibility but then reality hit. Now I just try to better my average score which is a more manageable goal. Trying for a 5.2+ instead of 6.8 or better...you decide. But don't be discouraged because every so often you hit the voters right.

It was a lucky first out of the gate run with a unique, albeit well planned, but still lucky shot.

Actually, you're simply a very talented photographer. Not sure luck has too much to do with it! :-)

Uhmm yeah...dontcha just HATE it when those teeny little tree frogs spring from the trees with their little umbrellas without warning and vanish on a strong spring breeze?! ;-)

My first Entry:

Last week's entry:

I'd say DPC is more about improvement then it is about winning ribbons. I'm not a ribbon-hater, but just take it easy.

That would ribbon if it was shot in the format of stock photography. In other words, strip it of all its technical flaws, charm be damn. I often wonder what this site would be like had it started during the film days rather than the current substance-empty High Def era.

LOL. Oh I planned it - but lucky in that the rotation and angle worked out because it was not as controlled as I hoped in my "minds eye". Thank you Melethia for your kind words, you are too kind. Snaffles your description had me laughing out loud and thinking what a truly fun and whimsical world that would be.
