I said it earlier, I'll say it again. You have only entered 6 challenges in 5 years. You have to practice. Practice at photography and practice at getting the DPC look that will get you the ribbons you want.

Perfect practice makes perfect. Or something like that...

You've only entered 4 challenges... there are hundreds of people on this site who have entered over 100 challenges and never gotten a ribbon. I've been on the site for three YEARS and never gotten a ribbon. 49 challenges later, still no ribbon. I've gotten quite a few 6.0's and 6.1's in the past, still no ribbon.

We all want a ribbon, life is unfair, so shut up and quit complaining!

(not meaning to be harsh, but if everyone who has entered more then 3 challenges, who has scored above 5.0 and was a complete retard on this site posted a forum exactly like this, the forums would be full of complaining retards.)

Coleman's... umm... I mean Jackson's, Jack's, Jay-Man's, Jay's, Mr. Gariety's, Jxn's, Mr. Jay's response gives me hope for the future generations. :)

One of my favourite quotes of all times is "All generalisations are false" :)

Sorry for being offensive... but you can't just go around complaining about how hard it is for yourself al the time, nobody likes it.

Jack, I just reckon you wrote what 90+% of people who have read this thread were thinking, but were not willing to post.............

I really don't think it was the honest feedback, but rather Jack's limited vocabulary (i.e. need to use words like "retards") which users found disrespectful. Hopefully it's just a function of his age.

Having said that, the very existence of this thread just makes me feel sorry for the OP. Clearly somewhere there is a disconnect between his perception and.....reality.

I thought that had already happened. I've made my contribution.

Has anyone noticed he's entered only 6 challenges?

If you fail the first time, or in this case, 6, try try again.

Egeneral has over 600 challenges entered and I don't see him whining about not winning ribbons.

Relax and enjoy yourself taking photographs, it'll come.

Patience is a virtue. The ability to wait for something without excessive frustration is a valuable character trait. :)

I wasn't complaining by any means. I take photos as a hobby and have fun doing it. A ribbon would be nice to have that all.

There was an explanation in full, probably something he should have said in his initial post.

BTW, limited vocabulary? I was being humorous! For the love of god...

(*sighs loudly*)

Oh, well

Guys please don't misunderstand me here I'm not complaining. I just wanted feedbacks on how people feel about not winner a ribbon. I do this as a hobby and enjoy doing it. I will keep entering contests no matter if I win or not.

Ought to be a short term achievable goal.

it annoys me slightly how hard pressed you are in saying how hard it is to ribbon and that you want one when you already had one, you just cheated a little.

If ribbons we easy enough to win in the first few contests you entered they wouldn't be nerly as special, and therefore not nearly as coveted.

Agreed. At a friends suggestion, I participated on another contest site for a couple of months. (No date restrictions on entries either) Stuff that was coming in mid-pack on DPC was regularly nailing the top 3 over there. Guess what? I got bored with it and have not been back in a while.

I'm here to learn, and I'm happy to start at the bottom. If I were ribboning now the world of photography would be a very grim place. I'd imagine most are here to improve and test their abilities and creativity, not collect virtual fabric.

I fully agree. If winning ribbons were easy, well then what's the point? From everything I have heard and seen, this is one of the toughest, if not THE toughest, competitive-photography site in the world. When I first joined this site it was because this guy sitting at the Internet computer next to mine in a local library was scrolling through these amazing images. He caught me peeking over his shoulder, showed me the site, and that very evening I set up and shot for my very first challenge, with my dinky little Samsung Digimax 2.01mp

Here it is:

And nobody flinched from telling me that it was blurry, out of focus, too dark, etc etc...and they continued to tell me, until I learned how to do things right. Learning is a lifelong process.

First, you have to decide why you are here. Which, in your case, seems to have been done and it appears it is to get a ribbon. Fine and well, I've no quarrel with that.

If you want a ribbon, then study the styles and techniques of the previous winners. This will give you an idea of what the voters like. Then start shooting and processing in the style(s) that score well here. It may mean that your personal tastes, style, and values must be set aside in order to achieve this. That may be the price of winning a ribbon. (Some are lucky enough to have a native style that appeals to the masses. We call them ribbon hogs. ;-)

In the end it is up to you. Shoot for score, or shoot for your own artistic vision. Both are valid. Both are worthy. The first would be a photographer that shoots assignments for clients. The second would be someone aiming to have their own personal shows. I do not value one above the other.

Without sounding completely rude, your photography just has a long way to go (note: mine does too). And it is really hard to tell how far it has to go because you only have 5 images online here.
I haven't submitted for a while because I've been busy with other things in life, but when I was consistently submitting I could tell that I was improving. I saw through the viewfinder better, my processing choices improved, all around I felt stronger. I was super happy when I made some top twenties and one or two top tens.

Use the community--see how much response this thread has? If you have a question about specifics, or techniques, or even a single image--ask it! One thing DPC is not short on is opinions.

Work to move up the leader board. Set a goal for how many challenges you will enter... one a month, one a week, etc. Enter the free study and watch your images get killed--by far the toughest challenges--I'd feel totally confident about an image and down it went!

Its like I tell my students. You certainly can't get better at photography by NOT shooting photos--so go out and shoot! Good luck!

LOL, when I first saw the thumbnail just now, I though that the parachuter was a piece of dirt on my screen, and tried vigorously cleaning it off!
It was only after it was not moving that I realized it was part of the image.
Up close its completely obvious of course :-P

Ain't that the truth! During voting, I am usually disappointed in how my FS entries perform, until after the challenge is over and I see all the great shots I gave high votes to that came in below mine.
