Well they may have saved you from something but I cannot get your image out of my mind. It is so provocative, harsh, and upsetting (not in any way saying your photo is bad - on the contrary). I think you should consider sharing it with your choice of anti-smoking advocates if you can figure out who they are.

I think a good part of your score was because it was so shocking. I think people's emotional reaction came out in the scoring. We haven't had too many photos on here that have evoked such a negative reaction to the subject. So I think judging the photo, and judging the contents of the photo got jumbled in the mix.

Maybe you're right but I think it's highly possible that the subject wasn't voted on, as such, but the photo was just judged as being plain old street photography.

I appreciate the dialog, Pen and Wen (!).

First of all, let me say that I had no ambitions in terms of score with that shot. Sometimes it's fun to ride on shock value alone and watch great comments come in -- even if it is at the expense of your score.

Secondly, yes, DPC votes from the gut. Happy pictures get happy scores. And vice versa. Usually. Had the exposure and focus and processing been pristine, I might have gotten a slightly higher score. But the image had no redeeming qualities. It was dark on many levels, and I used a bit of irony in my title to acknowledge that.

Finally, there's the composition itself. Yes, I hate smoking. At the moment, I'm watching my mother smoke herself to an early grave. But (for me anyway) that was only part of what was disturbing about the image. The child is practically being force fed the cigarette. She's being manipulated like a puppet. Look at the way her limbs are resting. Subtle, but I think it was missed by voters who were eager to get back to pictures of pretty birds and landscapes. Again, I don't expect it would have helped my score any. Probably would have made it worse.

Sorry for the digression.

No digression. Yes, her arms straight out touching mama and papa?

I like the way you think. Sometimes I enter something just because I want to. Nice to see that scores aren't the only redeeming quality.

I'm glad your thinking was to get the photo out there. Who cares about the score.
And yes, I noticed the whole stance thing. It's despicable. Like I said, I can't stop thinking about it.
